Title: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: bluegate on April 18, 2008, 07:35:27 AM I have build the Overtone Special kit #2 and made the cabinet and head from scratch.
Not great I'm afraid, cabinet & head are not what I hoped to be in the looks department. But it sure does sound very good! welkom Looks nice. Very personal maybe you could considder putting some of the cloth on the amp head. I have oredered mine as well. another 8 weeks :-( Groet Steven Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: bluegate on April 18, 2008, 10:31:09 AM Hello Steven,
I'm not doing anything on the housing anymore. Took to much time, now I just want to play the Overtone. Maybe in an couple of months I can find the will to redo the housing with Blue Tolex. I saw that you ordered as well, and bought a cabinet with two 12H65's. Did you find someone to build the Klein-ulator? I have received all the parts today so that is my next project. Not that the old Intellifex needs it, but for possible other effects. Dave Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: mcinku on April 18, 2008, 10:55:28 AM At least you have a cab... I'm still in the process of completing it... and yes it takes a lot of time :-\
;) Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: Steven_nl on April 18, 2008, 11:18:36 AM Yeah Someone was kind enough to offer to build me a Kleinolator. I put it on hold though. I wanna try it with my PODXT Pro rack 1st to see if that works. I prefer to use a little stuff as possible.
By the way. I'm selling my Marshall Valvestate Pro 120/120 stereo mostfet power-amp in een SKB case with 2 small Ceelestion G12H-100 cabs. Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: ChrisL on April 19, 2008, 02:59:02 AM Hey bluegate. Nothin wrong with that...looks pretty spiffy to me. It needs two big white racing stripes ala mustang with a pinstripe lettering "Elenor"... 8)
Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: Brad166 on April 19, 2008, 03:25:06 AM LOL, thats awesome. That would be perfect. It could use something extra to realy make it stand out.

I like the racing stipes Idea! Maybe I'll just do that ;D Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: bluegate on April 19, 2008, 11:16:43 AM I play a Fender Eric Johnson strat with Bareknuckles Apache pickups.
The Overtone gives me a great Clean sound but the OD was to bright. So I did some mods to the Overtone to get more balance in the sound. Mods: - Bright cap from 270pF to 100pF. - Snubber caps from 270pF to 270p+330p parallel on V2a & V2b. - PreOD resistor from 150k to 220k. - Removed Filter on Effectsloop (R+C). - Resistor before the Ratio pot from 150k to 300k. - Mid cap from 0,01uF to 0,047uF. Now I can play Clean with bright switch on and still use the OD. And with PAB it still sounds great without getting harsh on OD. Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: Luithien on April 19, 2008, 02:37:31 PM Interesting changes Bluegate. Can I ask what speaker/cab you are using?
JT Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: bluegate on April 19, 2008, 04:45:34 PM Build the cab myself, it has a Jensen C12K speaker in there with two ports on the front side
of the baffle. Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: Luithien on April 19, 2008, 11:13:57 PM Care to share the dimensions on your cab and ports?
JT Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: bluegate on April 20, 2008, 12:35:15 AM It's basically the bottem side of my Bogner Shiva 1x12" combo.
Dont' have the measurements any more. But aprox: 62 cm wide, 35 cm high and 30 cm deep. Ports are 7 cm in diameter. Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: erwin_ve on April 21, 2008, 06:55:20 AM Nice work Dave!
You're having the biggest value on the snubber caps I've seen so far. Sure getting curious for the sound of that. Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: bluegate on April 27, 2008, 10:40:52 PM OK, I used the Overtone for bandrehersal.
Tone could be improved. Problem, it sounds a little boxy. Snubber cabs will return to 330pF, now to much. And the OD is to dense, must find a sweetspot for the trimmer. At low volume it sounds very good, but at band volume the sound is very different. My bandmembers asked me if I played louder than normal, the sound cuts through the bandmix very well... ;D Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: Luithien on April 28, 2008, 01:11:16 AM Interesting comments on the amp changing as volume goes up. Good to know.
JT Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: hywelg on April 28, 2008, 08:47:51 AM I've got the OD trimmer on the back panel and I think I'll get what I want with it set very low indeed, approx 9 o'clock. If I need more I'll use a pedal. I think having the OD trimmer higher can get you a nice lead tone, but if you need some crunch for chords its not that nice.
I found (and I haven't taken mine to a rehearsal yet, need to finish the box) that with the MV at 1½ it sounds dead, very flat no sparkle, but with a hotplate on -8dB and MV on 4 it is transformed, great clarity and sparkle. Can't wait to try it on 4 without the hotplate. Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: bluegate on April 28, 2008, 04:06:10 PM I use mine with an Intellifex so the master is at 4 and I control the volume on the Intellifex.
Just ordered an Eminence Red, White & Blues speaker for my cab. I had the current Jensen C12K laying around so I used that one to test and to build the cab. Then we'll see if the cab sounds boxy or that it's just the C12K... Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: Mondoslug on April 29, 2008, 12:18:51 PM I tried mine with a Replifex which is pretty much the same thing but it was not sounding good with the OT.
Weird, my Line 6 DD4 and TC Nova delay sound pretty good in the loop. I don't have any type of loopalator tho. Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: erwin_ve on April 29, 2008, 04:06:49 PM I tried mine with a Replifex which is pretty much the same thing but it was not sounding good with the OT. Did you have the +4dB button switched "on"?Weird, my Line 6 DD4 and TC Nova delay sound pretty good in the loop. I don't have any type of loopalator tho. It works, it just feels like it's being loaded down or something. Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: bluegate on April 30, 2008, 09:38:39 AM I'm also building an old version of the Klein-ulator.
But until then, this will have to do. Yesterday I did my first gig with the OTS. Left my Bogner Shiva at home, no backup... 8) And it sounded very good, I redialed the toneknobs and got better results. I still think the cab is a bit under par, but I'll wait for the R,W&B to come in. Also I made ports in the baffle but forgot to tune them. So this also could present the current problem. I left the OTS as is, with 600pF snubbers and trimpot set to 12 'o clock. Today I have a gig but only a 45min. show so must use provided amps. Will use my OCD with my custom Fuzz. Amp will either be Randall RG series or Marshall VS series... :-[ Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: hywelg on April 30, 2008, 10:28:16 AM How do you tune a cab in respect of front facing ports? I'd like to try a closed back ported to the front but wouldn't know how to tune it.
Thanks Hywel Harris Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: Mondoslug on April 30, 2008, 11:35:12 AM I'm also building an old version of the Klein-ulator. Cool I thought I read in another post after a rehearsal you were going back to the original 270pf snubbers? But until then, this will have to do. Yesterday I did my first gig with the OTS. Left my Bogner Shiva at home, no backup... 8) And it sounded very good, I redialed the toneknobs and got better results. Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: bluegate on April 30, 2008, 09:33:17 PM Yes, after bandrehersal I was thinking to go back to 330pF snubbers.
But now I'll leave it at 600pF, come up with this at low volumes using my strat with singlecoils. Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: bluegate on May 01, 2008, 12:23:23 PM How do you tune a cab in respect of front facing ports? I'd like to try a closed back ported to the front but wouldn't know how to tune it. My cab is based on the bottom end of my Bogner Shiva. It has two ports in the baffle. I forgot to look what they did inside the cabinet with the ports. There are two short pipes attatched to the ports. My ports are a bit smaller than the Shiva's now you'd expect the pipe to be longer. But with calculators on the www I found out that a smaller diameter port results in a shorter pipe... So I'm off to the hardwarestor to find me some PVC... Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: bluegate on May 02, 2008, 09:37:15 PM OK, I did all the tweaks from the tweak-layout.
And the tone is great, I'm now back at 330pF snubbers and no piercing highs. Only thing that I changed is the resistor before the Ratio pot, used 330k, to me this sounds better than the 180k in the layout. I also found materials for my two ports, now my cabinet should be tuned. Have to wait till bandrehersal to hear the difference. Still waiting on my RW&B speaker, it's in backorder... Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: Steven_nl on May 03, 2008, 11:15:53 AM I might come around to your place when I get my amp. I'm probably the only one here who has an expert living 1 mile away hehe
Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: bluegate on May 07, 2008, 06:01:58 PM OK, just a few weeks... than we can compare a standard Overtone to a tweaked Overtone.
Stuut & Bruin had all the parts I needed, and is just around the corner of my house. Title: Re: My DIY Ceriatone Overdrive Special Post by: Steven_nl on May 07, 2008, 07:18:17 PM I wonder which version will be " standard" by the time my amp is being built.
