Title: Mod Suggestions
Post by: fixxe on July 25, 2014, 08:24:21 PM
Hey, I'm ordering an OTS 50W Special and was wondering which mods to get...

The following I already thought about:
-NFB Loop on/off switch
-3-way toggle switch for slope resistor
-1/2 power switch

What else should I consider?

Thanks!

Anyone? Or are the basics covered with that?

NFB Loop switch - Good idea
Slope resistor toggle switch - I wouldn't. You're messing with DC plate voltage.
Half power switch - IMO, not worth it. On a 50W all you can do is switch from Pentode to Triode mode. Doesn't lower volume appreciably and messes with tone. Get to know the Master Volume or get a C-Lator

Hmm, I saw that others liked to change the slope resistor to 68k or 180k and it seems to work well for them. So would a toggle switch really be bad, and in what way?

I would use a 3-way toggle switch for the NFB. Off, standard value and something inbetween. Sometimes off can be a little bit too much and the standard value not enough.
I'm one of those who changed the slope to 68k. I like it that way. Don't know why a toggle wouldn't work, but I don't know much about amps. I let a friend do all the modding. (Though I was with him and know exactly what he has done.)
Half Power Switch is not necessary in my opinion.

What value would you suggest for inbetween?

I like to wire up a 250pF mica cap on one side of a relay, to be switched in series with the treble cap (like a mid boost without the 3.9M Resistor to ground. I add the 100k to the center of the treble pot, to be switched to the center lug of the bass pot. Then put a 120pF bright cap on the other side of the switch controlling the relay. This is kind of a Strat/humbucker switch. It lessons the lows, without rolling high end off and increases the high end content all at the same time. It's a Mid shift, Bright increase, and Bass Cut in one control. It could easily be done with a 3pdt mini toggle as well.

Also Another good mod is to Have the regular Preamp Boost and a Full tonestack lift both on relays, I wire the Bass pots's 10k to ground to the Mid controls Ground, then lift the ground with a relay. If you wire the tonestack lift backwards to the regular preamp boost, you'll get 2 different distinct boost options. Add a Trim pot to the Tonestack ground lift and you have a variable preamp boost too.
