Title: Levels with "dumblelator"and multi fx (thinking out loud) Post by: Steven_nl on May 17, 2010, 07:09:13 AM I use one of Erwins Dumbleators and a Rocktron Xpression.
The Rocktron has an input and an output pot. I guess I just put those on max and set the level with the "Semd" of the Dublelator? ps: I have the impression. Setting the level has a big impact on the high frequencies. (more open and transparant and more sparkle). Is my line of thinking correct? ??? Title: Re: Levels with "dumblelator"and multi fx (thinking out loud) Post by: erwin_ve on May 18, 2010, 08:25:32 PM Hi Steven, Setting you fx to the max reduces noise. (it's minor)
The available signal level has effect on the recovery side of the dumblelator. Because there is a Local Negative Feedback(LNFB) circuit. It's acting a bit like a compressor but only with a high frequency roll-off. The high level signal peaks will roll off highs. With low signals the effect of the LNFB is minor. So; With a pick attack the signal enters the LNFB and will roll-off highs, when a signal is decaying the highs will become more prominent because the the LNFB isn't working much. That's why signal levels matter and also the middle knob of your dumblelator is part of that. Hope this will help, I tried to xplain it as non-technical as possible :) Title: Re: Levels with "dumblelator"and multi fx (thinking out loud) Post by: mcinku on May 19, 2010, 06:20:18 AM As far as I know this digital effect devices operate best if they are set at unity gain.
The way I do it, I set my input knob (on the effect device -Lexicon) at noon... then set my Drive knob (D-lator input), in a way that I don't clip the AD converters. My Lexicon has limiter circuit built in so that helps as well. With the rest two knobs (D-lator) I control the volume of the amp.... and output on the Lexicon is used to set up the effect level. My setup includes Suhr Minimix which transforms signal path into parallel mode.... this makes things a little different compared to standard serial configuration. ;) Title: Re: Levels with "dumblelator"and multi fx (thinking out loud) Post by: Steven_nl on May 19, 2010, 06:42:09 AM Thanks guys
But why not set the input on the Lexicon at max and then set the correct level with the send on the D'lator? Title: Re: Levels with "dumblelator"and multi fx (thinking out loud) Post by: Nairbr on May 20, 2010, 01:27:34 AM Thanks guys Then it wouldn't be at unity gain and you can induce unwanted noise into the signal I.E. hiss by boosting a quiet signal into the Lexicon. But why not set the input on the Lexicon at max and then set the correct level with the send on the D'lator? I know we are talking about Multi FX units not floor pedals but I found my send levels on my Klein by using my UniVibe which is muddy with a low signal and thins out if the signal gets too high. I don't use it actually in the loop but it was a good way to find my send level. Title: Re: Levels with "dumblelator"and multi fx (thinking out loud) Post by: Steven_nl on May 20, 2010, 07:10:58 AM Oh ok. I would think there wouldn't ae a difference between a high Send level on the D'lator and a high input level on the FX.
Title: Re: Levels with "dumblelator"and multi fx (thinking out loud) Post by: mr fabulous on July 02, 2010, 03:01:08 PM when i first got my amp, i used my GNX4 in the effects loop with the klein. if the output level on the gnx was too high the amp would howl terribly especially with the 3 klein knobs set to 50%. i found that setting a level comparable (or maybe a little louder) than your guitar level on the gnx was optimal, especially in getting extra sparkle in the tone.
nowadays i use a reverb and delay pedals in the loop and they work just fine. hope this helps. Title: Re: Levels with "dumblelator"and multi fx (thinking out loud) Post by: Steven_nl on July 05, 2010, 03:01:52 PM Could you clarify that a bit?
How would you go about comparing ? Title: Re: Levels with "dumblelator"and multi fx (thinking out loud) Post by: mr fabulous on July 05, 2010, 03:11:57 PM the gnx is a very good preamp and therefore has lots of gain. its able to drive a valve amp hard, in fact its capable of driving a power amp on its own. because of this if the level from the output of the gnx is too high the klein does not seem to like it, probably because its designed to accept lower levels at the levels of guitars and normal effect pedals.
to get a good acceptable level out of the GNX ot any multieffector. plug it into your amp and and run it bypassed and then unbypassed, and adjust the output level to match. as i said, i little higher level is ok, but too much seems to drive the klein into levels it was never designed to operate at. hope this is clear |
