Title: kT66 power tubes..?? Post by: Bluestone on July 27, 2008, 08:50:30 AM Has anybody considered using, or tried a pair of KT66 power tubes in the OTS..?
My understanding is the KT66 is often compatible as a substitue for the 6L6, but apparently not in all 6L6 amps. It would seem the tonal characteristics of the KT66 could very well be something worth considering. Has anyone got experience on the subject of KT66 tone and bias requirements etc..? If the tubes fit in the space available, which they should, you should have no problem. You will need to check your bias since KT66's are usually run a little colder than 6L6's. A bias of around 30mA should be fine. I have a 6L6 based amp that I run KT66's in and they seem to be a little sterile for my tastes. They are very clear and quiet, but not quite as musical as The Winged C, JJ or TAD 6L6s I have used. Interestingly, I have had the same experience with KT77s vs. EL 34's. the KT77 is an amazing clean, clear, sort of audiophile's dream tube but does not seem as musical as a Winged C EL34. I would be really interested to hear what you think of KT66's in your Overtone Special.
