Hi all,

I fired up my OTS today just to practice at home - I installed some og the mods described in an earlier thread (http://ceriatoneforum.com/index.php?topic=852.0. Everything was fine yesterday I played for about 1/2 an hour at reasonable volume - it sounded GREAT !
BUT today it started smelling REALLY weird...Smoke came out of it and the power tubes had a blue light in them.
I turned it off right away and got really sad........ here's a picture of what i can see -
http://imageload.dk/browse/file/1daf22ca67a107b4e8c17db6e1a9d0b4/

I don't know anything about electronics but it doesn't look good - does it Huh???

Looks like you have shorted the heater wires somewhere. Take it to a tech.

Hi Franne

Mods I’ve mentioned has nothing to do with high voltages or currents ! so no flies on me my friend.
Lesson to non soldering guys: DO NOT MESS WITH TUBE AMPS !!! if you don’t know how to.

On the picture it looks like you’ve shortened trance’s low voltage power out cable.
Very sorry about that!
Take it to the tube amp technician !!!

to Pickmaster - no no no - I NOT pointing in your direction at all !!! The mods you suggested is in the pre amp and this fault has to do with the power amp...no worries !!!  Wink

I had a tech look into it today - He measured things and wverything seemed to be fine - so we swapped the 6L6's to a new pair - and everything seems to work again ....... D***** I hate it when tubes crash...can be so expensive..  Angry

Anyway - I think i can solder on 2 new wires on the tranny, and then I need a new On/Off lamp (the housing has been melted as well) - and then it should be fine again. .... hopefully.   :Smiley

Could have been a bad valve but , I've not seen this happen.
Are you sure the 3.15 section of the transformer is good.

Remove the heaters at the tag strip, check both sides for shorts to ground.
You could heat shrink the damaged wires.

WOUU that looks bad, man if this would happen to me, I would replace the PT, ...just to be on the safe side.
I know it's an expensive part but damn with a PT like that I would not be able to sleep at night.

 Sad
