Title: Is this possible? (Tweaking question...)
Post by: AdrianJ on October 02, 2008, 12:43:47 PM
I'm very (very - almost painfully) close to ordering an Overtone and I think I've settled on the non-HRM version which I'll be having built for me by a custom amp company over here in the UK.

From what I'm read the OTS has quite a "mid-heavy" (for want of a better term) tone to it. In theory would it be possible to change components out to reduce the overall mid-content of the tone? Am I right in thinking that using the Jazz setting reduces it somewhat?

It might be that the sound of the amp stock would be what I'm after, and I'd give it a month or so before tweaking, but I'm just thinking out loud (as it were).

If you gonna let it build by someone else, you can ask him to change the mid cap for you to 0.05uF. It is making the mid control over the amp more sensitive.

Wow, that was even quicker than Nik's usual response!!

When you say it makes it more sensitive, does that mean that it has a larger effective sweep?

Thats correct; a more effective sweep.
Nik always responds fast; I happened to be online :P

On the same theme.
Does this effect the Jazz/Rock setting?
I find a little to much(on the rock) not enough(on the jazz).
any way of bringing these in line?
Nick

So I'm looking the layout from Nik's site....which cap are you suggesting I have changed? I can't see on eon the mid pot...

Also, what effect would changing the bass pot to 250k and the treble pot to 250k Audio rather than linear taper (as in a Fender AB763 circuit) have on the overall tone?

It is the cap leading to the mid pot.
Without having the layout in front of me: It's the cap located on the outer right side of the main board.

Are there any talented experts out there who could advise on how to dispense with the JAzz/Rock switch (I only ever use the Rock setting) and turn it into a Dumble/AB763 mid switch? ie scooping out the mids to make it more like the classic Fender EQ?.

TIA

Hi Hywel

I hope this is very easy. Get 50k linear trimmer and hook it up to one side of the switch. Adjust mid scoopout with the trimmer while switch is on.

On this diagram PAB is disconnected. For my amp I’m using  more flexible boost system. I’m finishing my amps mod layout in couple of days and hope to publish it here.

Best wishes

Thanks for that. Will give it a try, though I was thinking more along the lines of changing the value of the mid cap and possibly the resistor prior to the mid cap (I think there is a proper name for this but I can't remember . Really showing my ignorance now!). Playing around with the Duncan Amps Tone Stack Calculator by changing these two values its seems you can shift the mid scoop point more towards the bass end and accentuate it aswell.

Looking forward to seeing your mods, since your amp clips do sound very good indeed.

Thanks
