I want an amp with the features & flexibility of the OTS, but I don't really think the voice is right for me.  Any suggestions?

To expand a little, I really want one amp that does it all, with pedals if needed.  I know I am somewhat demanding  ;D

I want BF cleans, Tweed Deluxe cleans & OD, Marshall Crunch & more.  I cannot justify lots of amps, so that is out.  I just cannot decide what to get. 

The OTS, seems like a good compromise, but the voice seems to be compressed or honky in the mids and this doesn't seem like anything I want. 

Even so I am tempted to order an OTS, and use it as a framework for modifying.  Also, speakers and cabs will make a difference so maybe there is something here that will help.

As you can see I am a bit confused, some guidance would be appreciated  :)

   I understand what you are trying to say.
the overtone clean channel with pedals can do what any fender amp will.
but if you want a good sounding vintage fender amp to run pedals through... I would suggest a black face pro reverb. an amazing amp to say the least.

I have just been listening to more clips, a lot seem to be showing the amps smooth & compressed qualities.  Quite a lot seem to have Celestion G12-65 speakers too.  It also seems like a lot of clips have the tone control rolled back on the guitar.  All in all smooth, and kinda jazzy.

Whilst these clips are really nice, I also need a less compressed more open tone.  Will the overtone also do this (maybe with less smooth speakers)? 

I really need to make convincing Free & AC/DC type tones as well, I'm happy to get them with a different cab & a pedal.  But will it work for this?

You could use a 10 band EQ to adjust the amp to your liking. I would use the clean settings and get the marshall sound from your pedal. A very good inexpensive pedal for this is a BSIAB II from General Guitar Gadgits. You can buy a kit or they will build it for you. Good Luck with your tone search!

I find that when you turn the ratio up, the od channels tone opens up.

Thanks guys, having thought some more on this I have decided that a JTM45 is a better amp for me. 

Sure it lacks the options that the Overtone has, And I would like 2 channels.  But it is quite a simple amp, I reckon it can cover all I need from Fender cleans to JCM800 (with pedals).  And I think I can modify it to do anything over time.

If you think this is crazy, then please do say so.  I'm open to hearing all sides of the argument, let me know too if you think this is a sensible approach.  :)

I've build the Overtone Special and you're right its a fine amp, if you twwek it to your likings.

If you prefer AC/DC and Free, I agree with you, this is not your amp.
The OTS is for "touch"/nuance playing a la Robben Ford etc. (and you need a very experinced and dynamic band for that one and style.)

Go for the JTM45 or perhaps a AC30/ DC30 or similar (I have one of those too) for pedals and rounchy rock, which is also great.

I recommend the super lead or jtm 45 for what you are going for. 8)

No, You need SPIDER VALVE 2X12 or 100W head with small 4x12 cab.
Any sound you want is there.

Mmm, well I am not a fan of modelled amps, nor Line6.  But, it can do no harm to track one down, and see.  So, thanks for the suggestion.

BTW, how do these things "feel", can you get valve rectification like sag?

They are OK!

You have to program your sounds and than it's great.
Lovely valve amp.

My two suggestions would be get the OTS with some speakers that will cater to your sound more.
the celestion 100watt speakers have big bottom end and scoop some mids for you, you might like those.
Or get a clean tube amp with pedals or maybe even a modeler, but i would say a couple of pedals should do it.
