Title: HRM vs. HRM Mk. II Post by: NoelH on January 09, 2015, 04:34:03 PM Hey Folks,
Newbie here. I want to purchase either an OTS or HRM. As best I can understand from clips, YouTube, etc., I think I want an HRM. I play Bluesy Rock, some Hard Rock, and maybe a bit in the Robben Ford-esque Blues. I want the ability to get a little into the Marshall neighborhood, but I already have a 'mean' Marshall-type amp. From what I can best determine, HRM Mk. 2 might be my best choice. Can someone elaborate the differences between HRM and HRM Mk. 2? I see Mk. 2 has EL34's. Any other differences that are significant? BTW, Son of Yeti sounds phenomenal! Title: Re: HRM vs. HRM Mk. II Post by: T Wilcox on January 14, 2015, 10:32:07 PM Hey Noel
I have an MK2 50watt and the FM 50 watt. I have not played the regular HRM so I cannot say for sure, but based on conversations I have had with Nik and other HRM owners the MK2 will have less gain in OD channel than the HRM. MK2 is smoother for lack of a better word. Although the MK2 uses EL-34's it does not sound anything like my Marshall style amps. If you already got a Marshall, you could do what I do and run an ABY to both for the best sound if possible. I almost always use my 2550 on the left and then swap between the MK and the FM on the right. Since using this setup I almost always feel something missing when playing on either amp alone. You cant go wrong with any of the OTS's I added a switch to bypass the HRM tonestack on my MK2 which I have found very useful BTW. Gives up a little more grind when HRM is bypassed. Maybe ask Nik for this mod when you order if you get an HRM. Todd Title: Re: HRM vs. HRM Mk. He did a mod on the OD channel and it is exactly what I hoped to hear. I am sure that if you email him directly he can help you make the best choice.
Just my take...the 20 handles a band situation pretty nicely and I soooo prefer carrying that head to the larger stuff. It's spoiling me and now when I have to carry a 40 or 50w combo...well...yuck. Anyway, if you need it, you need it...but definitely get in touch with Nik, he is awesome to work with! Good luck, these are AMAZING amps. I don't understand why they don't get more attention. |
