Title: Headroom
Post by: simplkndofman21 on March 23, 2010, 12:14:37 AM
how much headroom is there available in the overtones?

if i want to remain totally clean at band/gig volumes will the 50W do? or will the 100W be better?

You will get perfect headroom with a 100w with a drummer/Band

The 50w clean will break up pretty quick if your competing with a drummer  without  the amp mic'd

The overtone and HRM have plenty headroom with 50 w.
With the bluesmaster you need 100w to get more headroom.

I was really just saying from experience that all the 50w amps I've played before have not been "completely clean" when turned up @ a band setting w/ out a mic
( not  just the OTS, all amps in general ). This is of course  my own opinion and I guess it really doesn't apply to the Non Hrm or Hrm OTS.

Yes in the bluesmaster the cleans in the 50w have to be dirty'd up because even my 100w bluesmaster gets a little gritty with a band setting w/ out a mic.

It also depends what speakers your using and how many. If you're going to be using a 2 G-12-65 type speaker it will definitely break up in a band setting w/ out a mic even. The EV has alot more clean Headroom and you may be able to have a clean sound with a 50w

There is really a bunch of possiblility's depending on your setup, guitar of choice, speaker, how many speakers that will be used, etc.

If Clean Headroom is what you're after I would suggest the 100w, pending speaker choice the 50w would be suffice too.

yeah, well i ask because you can never really be too sure. i once had a 120W peavey XXX that started to break up at band volumes, but i've also had a 50W Mesa recto that was louder than any drummer with master, channel and gain volumes all below a quarter.

I built a DC30 and get those really nice in between sounds and want the fully clean and fully saturated tones now. however i want to add in a tube buffered effects loop and i could do this with the space i save in 50W. i could possibly order a M.M. transformer set when building this and have it speced to run with KT88's.

i guess this leads me into further questioning since the KT88's should be both cleaner and punchier. i plan on buying the HRM version seeing as how i like to tweak and figure it will be easier to tweak down rather than add on. will this do a modern rock tone? something kind of foo fighters like?

run the KT-88's they sound beautiful, IMO they are superior to any other audio tube that can be used in these amps

What bias setting do you set for the KT88's?

Thanks

would i inquire to be correct that the KT88's have much higher headroom as well?

what wattage should i measure with 2xKT88's. i'm glad i've read a lot about them working so well in this amp because i've always wanted to try a kinkless triode.
