Title: Head Cab vs. Combo Cab
Post by: tboulette on September 23, 2011, 03:17:52 PM
I'm preparing to order an OTS FM50.  I plan to get a cab from Gabkits.com here in the US.

I've have ZERO doubt about the quality of the cabs Gab sells.  But I'm having a hard time deciding between a head cab and a combo cab.  Obviously the head is more versatile, at the expense of convenience (not to mention the expense of a speaker cab!)

Does anybody have any experience with a Gabkits combo cab and can comment on the sound?

I DO already have a 1x12 Avatar cab and a 1x12 Dr. Z cab (although that one's in regular use with my Gerhart/Guytronix Ardmore).  And have a couple of spare EVM 12L's lying around.  So, a head cab is not out of the question.

I do see some folks using these types of configurations... Welcome any insight or comments you have.

I got a cab for my 2550 from Gabkits.
I got 2 cabs and 2 2x12 speaker cabs from forum member Tenguitars here.
I will never go through Gabkits again!
Just my 2 cents

Todd

I have a 2x12 combo from gabkits for my BM. It is a cab for a matchless modified to fit the OTS series. It took a little longer than originally stated to build due to Anthony and crew at RME all having flu and pneumonia (I ordered during winter) but they were very communicative during the process and offered me a large discount, such as not charging for the custom mods, etc due to the wait time and the special they had at the time. One thing to consider is that gabkits outsources to RME. As far as sound, it sounds like any unmodified open back 2x12 combo that you have heard. It's a pretty simple design that hasn't changed in alot of years ;) it sounds pretty good. I may make a panel so I can close it up and have it be a closed back as well, but other than that it's good enough for rock n roll

Based on customer service I *might*order from them again, but tenguitars and sourmash have been having been getting great reviews as well.

John at thecabguy.com is very knowledgeable and helpful in design as well.

Hope this helps!

Gregg

Got a 1x12 coming from Ten Guitars as well. And....I am finally putting my incredibly heavy Mesa Mk II combo in a red snake skin head only cabinet..George GTS is making it. I 'd just seen a pic of it, its cool lookin. I have a 1x12 mesa cab currently with a Emi, maverick in it for further volume control. Not sure what I'll put in the Ten Guitars cab, either my Mesa's EV or perhaps by another Maverick.

I really like to get my speaker up to waist height, so I like the head only configuration, just don't loose that speaker cord on the way to the gig!!!  ;D

Just ordered an OTS FM100 (yep, went with the 100 watter) from Tenguitars, with a few switchable mods.  Blond/oxblood head cab.  Henry has been great to work with!  Can't wait!

I am sure you mean to say you ordered the FM100 from Nik and the cab from Henry right?
I see you got the head cab, what type speaker cab will you be running?

No, actually.  Henry is putting in a USA made OT and some other mods for me.

I plan to get a matching 2x12 from Henry as well, but that needs to wait until I unload some other gear.  In the meantime, I've got a couple of 1x12s I can use for now.

FYI mods are a half power switch, push-pull switch on the HF cap, and a switch on the Lin. Neg. FB between V1 and V2.

Actually, I think the only mod Henry is doing is adding the OT -- rest is from Nik.

Cool man
I did not know that Henry also offered amp work as well as cabs. Very cool

If you are getting a separate OT why are you not getting a different PT as well to save on shipping?

I got my BM/HRM 100 watt with the same mods form Henry back in May.  He's really great to work with and it's a great amp.

Not sure the difference is worth the trouble, I guess.
