Title: Great speaker for HRM
Post by: jubeman on December 28, 2009, 06:19:23 PM
I know this has been discussed before in great detail but just wanted to share this

I got an old 70S coffee can EV 12 SRO speaker and stuck it in my open back 2x12 along with my
EVM12L, at first I was disheartened as the mids were not as prominent but there was a ton of low end that was very clear and articulate. I always thought my EVM12L had lots of low but nothing compared to the SRO , the sro was very clear sounding compared to EVM12L but much darker sounding so I decided to tweak the   amp to suit the SRO first pulled the bright switch on pre amp gain this helped greatly jammed with it for an hour  TWEAKED THE MIDS TO 7or so and now I love this speaker much more than the EVM12L
it is a very clean sounding speaker if that makes any sense, and OD is so smooth as butter
also the cleans are brilliant. never thought I would find a speaker I liked as much as evm12l if you can get one of these I would recommend it highly, tho the alnico magnet weighs 18lbs overall much the same as EVM12L tho after playing the SRO I dont want to connect the EVM 12L yet,
it amazes me how much a difference  the speaker makes to an amp .  I would recommend this speaker to anyone who has an amp that is on the bright or harsh side   thanks Derek

Thanks for post - good info, even though I have a 50-watt OTS and not HRM version. I've only used a 1x12 cab with EVM12L Classic until recently purchased a Two Rock Sig Cab 1x12 with their 1265B.  Two Rock Sig Cab is very nice, 1265B seems to provide more mid range then the EVM12L, but does other things better, just not the cleans I get with EVM12L.  I just started messing around with using both cabs together and have found some nice compliments to each other.

Good info!

Tommy, I have the TR1265 and TR1265R. I'm curious about the TR1265B after your post. When I bought my speakers, I don't think the B was in production. Do you know what it sounds like compared to its predecessors?

My typo...long holiday season - I have the R, I felt sounded better with my 50-watt OTS, but have played through all TR speakers.

I like the B and the R speakers the best  - personally I like the EVM12L better than 1265 if that is a fair comparision - for a good clean speaker that is hard to break up?

The NEW 12-65B is the answer to those wishing the R speaker could handle more power- here it is! The 12-65B  has a warm and bright top end and great low mids and bass. The 12-65B is available in 8 or 16 ohms and is conservatively rated at 100 watts. Our New Favorite! Suitable for use with any Two-Rock amp, in 1- or 2-12 configuration. Higher powered Two-Rockers might try a 12-65 /65B combination in our Signature 2-12. It's the perfect balance and is standard equipment for the first time in our 10th Anniversary Package!

The 12-65R was developed for those Two-Rock enthusiasts desiring a livelier, brighter, lower power handling speaker. The R features a lighter, brighter cone, and offers more coloration when pushed. The 12-65R is available in 8 or 16 ohms and is conservatively rated at 75 watts. Suitable for use with any Two-Rock 50 watt amp(alone), with the Jet and Jet Signature,  or in  2-12 configuration. A popular option is the 12-65/65R combination in our Signature 2-12- the best of both worlds in one cab!

Arguably the best speaker for D style amps is FANE AXA 12 alnico.
100W, 101db. Sweet highs, awesome lows and mids.
But you have to give them at least 40 watt to open.

Here is the clip with FANE

Fanes are awesome but it seems like they may be out of business, Weber offers the AXA for about $200 and also the Crescendo which david gilmour uses. both are offered in alnico and ceramics, the alnicos costing more.

Fane is still making speakers I believe, they make a host of high efficiency speakers, drivers, tweeters etc. I could only imagine that an old Cresendo would sound great with a d-style amp. Fane was like the Ev of Europe in the late sixties. I once read a review that was done, talking about testing all sorts of speakers with a d-clone. Fane tested the highest on the list for efficiency,Max Decibles, frequency handling and full range capabilities that also included an EvM-12-L,SRO, a Jenson Neo and tornado,JBL's and all sorts of celestion's and Webers too.
