I'm looking to change my amp setup from my current Fender Blues Deluxe to a 2 amp setup of an Overtone Special and 1 other amp.

When the time comes I'll be getting the Overtone professionally built, but intend to build the other amp from the kit.

I've narrowed down the candidates to a JTM45 or 5E7 Bandmaster, but can't decide which to opt for.

I've heard that the OTS can't do Marshall-type sounds, so am leaning towards the JTM45, but then again I've always been a Fender guy so that pulls me back towards the 5E7.

Which do you think would be the better amp to pair with an OTS to give a flexible stage setup?

(And yes, I know the obvious answer is get all 3....and one day maybe I will, but for now I have to choose!!)

Ive got a Marshall Bluesbreaker alongside mine. Depends what you play I suppose. If you want a Marshall sound youll want a Marshall because the OTS just wont get there, but if you tend to stick with Fender type sounds then perhaps get something that does Fender better, something with a really nice tube reverb perhaps, like the Deluxe Reverb Reissue.

Well, a JTM45 is pretty fendery until you drive it into overdrive, then it gets a little more agressive than the 59' Bassmann it was derived from.

The schematic Fender bassman 59'/ Marshall jtm45 is pretty similar, but the components make the whole difference.

Hmm...except Nik doesn't make a kit of the Deluxe Reverb...

I've heard the OTS does a reasonable Fender Blackface sound (and according to Nik will also do a Tweed type sound!!), so I'm thinking that maybe I will go for the JTM45...

 I don't know if I agree with you about the ot not getting there. I have had a few friends play it, and they are marshall type players, and they were amazed. One thing I am becoming more and more aware of is the amp is very reactive and touch sensitive, it really seems like it takes on the style of who is playin it. And it definately sounds different thru an ev then if your playin it thru a marshall cab. Just my .02. great amp regardless.

I had a Bluesbreaker re-issue which is essentially a JTM45 in combo form- a really great amp but my problem with it was it distorted too much!  Getting a good clean tone was pretty tough, especially when playing with the typical power trio set-up as with my band.  I find the clean headroom on the OTS is great, and being able to dial in a good balance between clean & distortion is now indispensable to my tone.  I would count myself as very much in the 'Marshall' camp of players too- but the OTS does it for me in the distortion dept with no problems.  I've just had a stereo cab custom made for me by the Custom Cab Company loaded with Celestion Gold or G-65's (not sure right now!)

and I intend to use either an amazingly loud Ceriatone 18watt Marshall clone or a highly modified Crate VC-50 along with the OTS for bigger gigs and to enable some effects in stereo through the PA.  I'm a big fan of Joe Bonamassa & he combines Dumble/Marshall tones to amazing effect imho- so if I can get tones half as good as his I'll be a happy man! Might post piccies & sound samples if anyone's interested...

I know its an oldie, but Joe B would sound like Joe B even on a 100 USD Park. So  go practice  ;)

I am planning on using a Chicago Blues Box Roadhouse amp with my OTS. It should allow me to get a nice fender sound from the Blues Box and use the OTS for the overdrive. I am going to run each head through a 1X12 Two Rock cabinet.  ;)

OTS can do Marshall better than Marshall, it all depends how you modify it.
Bypass OD trimmer and 150ko resistor and you will get super high gain amp on overdrive and Fenderish cleans. ;D
