Title: Getting that "Larry" tone Post by: dannysgrandpa on November 10, 2008, 05:50:22 AM A long time ago someone asked about using 5881's in the OTS. Well, I have a set of Sovtek 5881's matched and biased at .33mV and I am nailing Larry's tone all day long! Mr. 335 himself uses Sovtek 5881's in his Dumble ODS 100's. He has #118 and #147.
Now, if only I could play like him... The 5881 has a "splatty" attack when overdriven and a bit less gain overall. You can get very big grind with them though, just turn the OD level up to 7 or 8...maybe even higher and hit the PAB! Leads will scream and chords... yes, chords will crunch and still be well defined and articulate. I love this amp!!!! define splatty please :-) I ask because I'd love my OTS to have a little less punch (I find the the typical in your face Twin sound a bit harsh). This is followed by the singing sustain. The6L6 has what I call more of a "pop" attack. Listen to some Larry Carlton and I think you'll hear what I mean. Does this sound crazy? Bill

I recently got my OTS set up (with Klein-ulator) and getting the tones I like (lately my head has been into Larry and Robben tones. I'm running NOS US-made Philips 6L6WGBs (basically 5881s), and I agree that they seem more "toneful" than the bigger 6L6GCs. Maybe not quite as powerful attack on notes (?) but seem "fatter"(?) More "liquid"(?). More "bloom"(?). Maybe that's the same as "splatty", I don't know...hard to describe how musical sounds feel with words. To quote Sheryl Crow, "if it makes you feel good, it can't be that bad". ;D For preamp I'm using a '60s Mullard for V1, NOS Telefunkens for the other two tubes. The amp really seems to like all kinds of guitars...so far tried with ES-339, Les Paul, Suhr Strat (sounds somewhat like Larry's Valley Arts), and a St.Blues Mississippi Bluesmaster with Burstbucker 5s (sounds better than I thought it would). I'm removing the FET and putting in a deep switch. Looks like a fairly simple mod. Looks like I'll be a bit closer to Larry tone. Look at the layout for the HRM on the Ceriatone site and look at how the switching is wired. To add the "deep" all I have to do is follow the layout to wire the switch and put it in the FET hole. I never use that input anyway. And yes, I'm in love with the amp! Bill
