Title: fx loop coloring the sound good or bad? Post by: Steven_nl on July 19, 2008, 03:14:33 PM Hi guys
I was at a local guitar tech shop to have a true bypass fitted to my CLS 222 leslie. I told hiom about my amp and the Kleinulator. He said he could install a small print 4x5 cm which fixed the fx loop. It's soldered onto the amps FX loop ands you can choose between series or parallel. He stressed that it doesn't alter the sound in any way. Is that a good or a bad thing? Mike Klein says that his Kleinulator aims to also alter the sound (like the Dumbleator). So what do you think? Cheers Steven Title: Re: fx loop coloring the sound good or bad? Post by: erwin_ve on July 19, 2008, 06:38:05 PM Hi Steven,
The Kleinulator altering the sound is a good thing. The d*mbleator, which is the whole idea for the kleinulator, is making some nice compression and high freq. roll-off. It is part of the dumble sound. If you put a non- coloring fx-loop in your ots, you're in fact further away from the whole concept. What do you like more; your effects with Kleinulator or without (is like a non coloring fx-loop)? Title: Re: fx loop coloring the sound good or bad? Sorry, I'm not a techie, but what is that supposed to mean? Title: Re: fx loop coloring the sound good or bad? Post by: Steven_nl on July 21, 2008, 08:09:42 AM The effect loop on the Overtone is unbuffered. I don't know the technical details but it can lead to level mismatches between the amp and the effects. Guys like Larry Carlton and Robben Ford use a Dumbleator to resolve this. (It's a seperate effect loop in a 19 inch rack). Mike Klein has designed a effect loop which also does the trick (it doesn't use a tube). Apart from fixing the level issue it also alters the sound a bit.
You can find quite a lot of info on this forum if you do a search. I was just wondering if people find it a positive thing that the sound gets altered. Like I said, a guy I know can fix the level problem without altering the sound. Iwas curious to hear peoples opinion about this. Title: Re: fx loop coloring the sound good or bad? Maybe you can do a little test; Use the kleinulator with your effects on bypass. And the ots without the kleinulator. Both examples have no effect sound. But you can clearly hear the difference between the kleinulator and without. You have to use your ears for making such decisions. Title: Re: fx loop coloring the sound good or bad? yeah so true Title: Re: fx loop coloring the sound good or bad? Post by: erwin_ve on July 21, 2008, 08:53:38 AM Hi Erwin Well...Did you test it?yeah so true Title: Re: fx loop coloring the sound good or bad? Post by: Steven_nl on July 21, 2008, 10:27:26 AM I'm at work ;-)
I have done a quick A/B yesterday. The sound with the Kleinulator is fatter IMHO, but that could also be a level thing. If you boost the signal a bit you'll get a bigger tone. I'll do some more testing tonight. Title: Re: fx loop coloring the sound good or bad? Post by: hywelg on July 21, 2008, 12:37:53 PM I would really appreciate your opinions on how the G-sharp performs without the Kleinulator and with it.
Thanks Hywel Harris Title: Re: fx loop coloring the sound good or bad? Post by: Steven_nl on July 21, 2008, 04:53:45 PM OK
I did the A/B test with and without the Kleinulator. First I took alle the effects out of the loop. The sound without the Kleinulator is more open and brighter. It also has more of a punch. when you hit a string it's more " in your face" With the Kleinulator the sound is somewhat jazzier, darker and a less percussive. it's sweeter, dare I say a bit compressed? Personally I'm not into that punchy sound. (It reminds of harsh Fender twins) Without the Kleinulator the G-Sharp (reverb/delay/chrous) seems to work less pronounced. Effects sound a bit better with the Kleinulator. Just my quick impressions. Please add more reactions on this. Title: Re: fx loop coloring the sound good or bad? Post by: poipounder57 on July 22, 2008, 04:39:45 AM Thanks for the review...I have a Kleinulator on it's way. Should be here any day now.
Title: Re: fx loop coloring the sound good or bad? Post by: hywelg on July 22, 2008, 08:05:57 AM Thanks for the comparison. I've been contemplating getting a G-sharp for a while now but have spent too much on pedals recently so its going to have to wait a while. I was concerned that the K rolls off the top end which I'm anxious to prevent since my amp is not that bright to start with (another story), so I think I'll probably try the G-sharp without a K for now.

Mixed emotions actually. I don't like the extra cables and extra deviece aspect. The extra 3 level pots make it harder to get a good setting. I do like the fact that the sound is "sweeter" and less punchy. Not sure of I could get the same results by tweaking the EQ and maybe the OD trimmer. |
