Heatingwires in the air + lead dress close to the chassis are important aspects in getting a nice dumble tone.

Indeed there are a couple of a lil additions. Nik ended up using the ground switch for the half power, added the Mega PAB switch on the rear which switches between the the standard resistor and a 22M resistor, and added the sag resistor on the center tap and attached the switch to the bottom of the chassis. I put a few more pics on here to show those..

I will, eventually. I guess I'm not one of the cool kids yet. I looked all over the net for pictures of heater wiring when I was building my amp, and while I found many examples of both ways, Nik's pictures and a few others done next to the chassis swayed me. If I had to do it over, I'd probably do it up in the air, as it'd be a bit easier.


I've been wondering about this. Nik's pictures have the heater wires AND the lead dress both against the chassis, right up next to each other. All I can say for certain is that my amp sounds REALLY nice the way I did it. And it's been great to have this forum to learn all this cool stuff about amp building from - and I really need to check out ampgarage also!

Is the megaboost useful?

Does the SAG switch make a big difference?

Ok, but remember that Nik got all his designs from Ampgarage, including the 'new' FM and 183 models. So perhaps Nik has just copied the wrong heater design :-D

If your amp is quiet and sounds nice as is, don't change a thing  8)

Do not worry about the heaters... I've seen a lot of big $$$$ 2Rock amps wired with heaters against the chassis.
...and 2Rock is "the" amp to have for D style amp... at least what some people say. Just look at John Mayer...  ;D

Bottom line.... if it sounds good, it sounds good.

Which level "kit" did you get??

On the Mega PAB, what's the resulting effect of those two resistor settings?
Anyone know what the stock value might be there?

It's right there on the layout... the stock value is 68K and mega PAB is 22M obviously.

Bigger the PAB resistor is, more boost you get.

Megaboost is indeed selecting the value of resistor to ground.

68K would limit the boost a bit, while a larger one (or none at all) boosts a lot.

Sag is a resistor to the HT center tap to ground, to have some sort of a saggy feel when switched in.

As for the heaters on the air, in the kitchen, or against the chassis - doesnt matter, as long as you tweak the other wires, esp the cathodes and to some lesser extent, the grids, away from the heaters.

And yes, HAD hangs in ampgarage these days, passing layouts around :)

To answer your question, the Mega PAB is very useful. It really gives some good dirt, without having to dial the OD Trim way up, which gives you the option of nice DStyle singing OD or something with more dirt if desired, without having to stop and turn the trim up. It is also very touch/volume sensitive which is very nice and unexpected as well. On the HRM it does show the Bassiness of the amp a lil more, as the tone controls are bypassed, but this could be tweaked via the internal pots
