Just got it this afternoon.  Wow!  Anyone want to suggest where to start with this amp?  Lot's of tweaking to be done.  C-Lator seems to work fine.

Suggestions on where to start with the settings?  Also, I've never seen one before, but it does not say FM anywhere on the amp.  It says Overtone Special by Ceriatone.  Is that correct?

To start put everything at 12:00 including C-lator, except maybe put OD trim on rear of amp at 9:00-10:00 then tweak from there to taste. Use the Return on C-lator as Master volume. Use Ratio to match the OD volume and clean channel volume levels.

It won't say FM anywhere on it. Maybe handwritten on the chassis by Nik or the final builder. That being said, have fun and wail the hell out of it for a few days and have fun breaking it in!!

Spent the first couple of days with a delay and a verb in the C-lator and playing straight into the amp.  Cleans are great!

Just starting to play with the foot switch now.  I've got the trim (back of the amp on about 10:00.  Does single coil SRV well.  THis is not a Van Halen amp for distortion.  But, I've got the 2550 for more of that kind of sound.  Still have not played them together yet.

So many bright switches, so little time.

It Is!!! and some more. You can even play heavy metal, just you have to tweak it little bit. Grin

Pickmaster, I'd love to see your settings for distortion.  I just get kind of a fizzy, heavy bass sound.

Still haven't been able to find that blooming / on the verge of feedback thing yet.

Jim,
I’ve just posted this simple mods to fellow board member Kevstar who also got the FM50 OTS. Applies to you as well.

1. Change 100k slope resistor to 68k 2watt. – bit more lower mids, compression and touch sensitivity.
2. add second 250pf capacitor to B2 tube, do not remove B1 250pf !!!
3. Put 3 way switch on master volume with OFF, 33, and 64pf caps.
4. Change RATIO’s (X) feeding 150k resistor to 10k and following 0,005mf cap to 0,01. You will thank me later.
5. Change MID-BOOST’s 390pf cap to 470, sweeter tone.
6. 12 way rotary is a very useful addition.

Now if you wish to have High gain setting on the amp operated by pedal, disconnect useless PAB relay and reconnect its one part to bypass a 220k resistor after drive trimmer, same time second part of the relay switches ON mid-boost which gives you more Mashally high gain tone. Also you can use mid-boost toggle to switch off or on mid-boost activation via pedal. In this case you won’t be able to use mid boost in normal situation, it becomes dedicated to high gain footswitch. Unless you use additional toggle switch. I’m sure good technician will do the job.
I just simply don’t have time and energy to make a drowing.

Here is a video of the amp's high gain setting (in the beginning) with a strat's neck pickup.

Best wishes.

Has anyone tried putting a mxr 6 band EQ in the loop? The EQ is kind of the key to a certain high gain sound on my mesa boogie mark IV - and I bet it would do the same for one of these amps.

Thank you for posting these thing Pickmaster!!!!

Actually, the high gain mod might be interesting to me too.

I took a look at your suggestions and mapped them out...  Just some clarifications... Like the "Master" mod, the existing Bright Switch has 66pf and 120pf caps.  Couldn't I just change the 120pf for a 33pf and be there?  V2 (your B2?) already has two 250pf caps and V1 has one.  Everything else you listed is pretty straight-forward.

Now for this High Gain mod using the PAB, that is REALLY interesting.  I'm not a HUGE high gain guy, but I do like some Mesa gainy tones at times.  I've been asked to do Creed covers and the like, and I would prefer to do it with an amp rather than a pedal.  I would think this mod would make a great sounding amp even more versatile... I'd HAVE to have THAT.  So far, the PAB is marginally useful at best.  If I gigged with it I might find out differently, but the boost so far has been minimal and tonally it hasn't gone to any kind of nirvana.  Basically, I could do better with an EQ pedal...

I would like some more detail(s) on this mod.  I LOVE pictures, drawings, diagrams, etc.  If anyone has one/any, please share!!!

Thanks again!!!

Hi Kev,

120pf on master makes amp to bright. It can be useful if you going to use 15’’ BASS speakers but 33pf adds just a bit highs and 66pf bit more. So it’s up to you.

When rewiring a relay use a thin two core shielded wire, connect the shield to the ground.
Alternatively check out fellow board member Plasticvonaband’s MEGA boost mod. It’s easier to install, just have to change PAB’s resistor and it adds really big boost.

Cheers
