Title: Finished My OTS - Nothing so far on start up (Prob Solved No prob after all)
Post by: captainbackfire on August 23, 2012, 02:05:52 AM
Hi  :)

So I finished my OTS 50

I checked everything yet again and decided to put in the tubes, set the controls properly for startup, plugged a speaker load and turned the switch ON. I dont get any response. No light from the indicator, no glow on the tubes. I didn't flip the Standy switch yet to be safe. I checked that my fuses are fine, checked connections again, so I tried and I got nothing again.

I really dont know what to check anymore cause everything checks ok.

My DMM show continuity (beep) between the two 3.15v heaters. Also to their center tap ground. Also theres continuity between the two gray wires (6v-0) to the relay power, theres also continuity from the IEC left and right lugs! ( i measured from the switch and the IEC socket).  Is this normal? I would think its because they're all AC? Is AC supposed to be an open circuit? Or does my DMM show inaccurate indication perhaps? Or is my PT like defective perhaps?

Continuity beep on heaters is normal... this is because resistanace is so small.

Did you check your fuse?
 ;)

My fuses were fine  ;D

It's all good now. I called our popular local amp tech to facilitate the first power up. He checked everything and apparently the PT needed something like an initiation? What's that? Something to that effect. So then it worked. We then noticed the foot pedal doesn't work. He found out that the DIN socket middle lug wasn't grounded so he put a jumper and the foot pedal worked. He then set the bias 'by ear' Later when he left, I measured the bias and it was at 70 mark. I adjusted it to 35-39 and it sounded much better and defined.

It sounds great through my G12-65 in a home made cab.

Now my only concern left is that I don't seem to notice any difference in sound when engaging PAB. What should it do and what could I have missed if in fact, it doesn't work?

Thanks  :) I should update my build thread. I got some pretty gut shots.

Also does the PT really get stingy warm? Its more like hot than warm. The OT and choke on the other hand, stays cool.

Could this be a result of over biasing?

PT initiation... never heard that one.  ???

PT should only get hot if an amp is running for a while at loud volumes... at least that's from my experience.
... but how hot it gets depends on the PT quality... if PT has big losses, then it will get hotter.

Set your tone controls much lower.  You'll jump more on clean than OD...

mcinku - Yes it now only gets warm hot when its playing for a while in moderate volume.

 :)

Kevster - I see. Im not sure what you meant with jumping more on clean?

I love the sound. When you tap the strings BOOM man! Now I know my guitar's faults so weeelll.
The amp tends to get noisy sometimes. Especially on overdrive. I realize my single coils hum like bees but I wanna make sure I dont have a microphonic tube.

There's a slight crackling noise kinda like rain on tarpaulin but very subtle. It goes up when I turn up the master vol not the pream vol. I know my v2 and v3 tubes can be faulty. They once took a ride with me in my backpack with other stuff in it. Funny how some things aren't really invited when you go on a gig out of town.
