Title: Fane Studio 12L

I'm using an EVM12L with my Bluesmaster 100 - it's coming up to its 20th birthday soon & I'd like to have a backup even though it's still going strong.

Just wondered if anyone has tried a Fane Studio 12L, and if so, how did it stack up against the EV?

Hi,
Studio 12L is a good speaker but it has Slightly reduced mids which suites heavy metal players. Loads of lows and highs. Still no match to EV !!!.
So get another EV.

Sir would this Fane be a good solution for somebody who finds an ODS/ OTS too mid heavy?

I like huge sounding strat tone. EVM 12L is my choice but I'm a bit concerned about too much mids from an OTS. I'm halfway through my kit.

It would be helpful if you can borrow a cab with Studio12L and try it, but if not… Yes, it is a great speaker and probably will work for you just fine.
It is definitely a huge sounding speaker with 102 db.

I see. I dont think I can try it beforehand though. Thanks for your advice. Yes I like my bass notes huge but tight and clean.

I personally find mine works well with only 30-40% of my amps, and definitely not my BM50 with a strat - but I use the BM50 with low preamp gain, high master, which is not common

Did you know that Eminence do a guitar/PA speaker (which is what the EVM12 is I understand) similar to the EVM12 but much cheaper?

to at least form an opinion before buying with your own ears, try Watford valve's sound selector, which plays many speakers with the same guitar and amp

WHich eminence model are you talking about? And would the Swamp THang be in the same league?

Alledgedly, the Eminence Delta Pro 12A is a near-clone.

I have not tried many Eminence drivers, since in the UK Celestion are good value.

But, in an old 2x12 cab, which was made to match my Fender Twin II, I have 2 x Eminence ME12-1008LE (from the 1990s)
I would not say they match the EVM12, they are smoother and not as bright or clear, but they share that very clean quality that few guitar drivers have - all the normal guitar drivers sound distorted compare to these. they would make a good cheap backup to an EVM12 I think, you can often buy these drivers used for £50 or less

I haven't really tried one of these heavy duty clean speakers. That doesn't mean difficulty in getting overdrive on the lead channel does it?

they're just cleaner speakers, the EVm12 being the cleanest. It just means the speaker doesn't colour the sound.
A vintage 30 for example adds loads of extra bits of distortion that many find attractive for a guitar - if you ran hifi through one you'd be appalled
Personally I found the evm12 too clean and bright for a BM, I prefer a celestion Gold, again a speaker that colours the sound too

I see. Yeah Celestions speakers typically seem to color the sound then? For example the G12-65 which I now have, seem to have a typical low midrange thing going on to my ears.

AFAIK all "normal" guitar speakers colour the sound a lot, but in different ways, probably 20x as much variation between models and brands than you'd get in hifi speakers
Very few are as clean and uncoloured as the EVM12.

Certainly it's not just Celestion with this type of colouration (which for most amps is usually considered a good thing)

I'm actually adding a Weber Neo 12 paper dome, which is a JBL D120 clone, minus the aluminum dome, of course, to my 2x12 to try to get a bigger bottom and more highs along with my 1265. I'll let you know how it goes!

bear in mind that running 2 different speaker types in parallel does not have predictable results, since the impedance of each driver varies with frequency, each driver will not have a 50% share of the signal at all frequencies. i.e. this will not sound the same as 2 identical amps run into the same 2 drivers individually. It usually takes a lot of trial and error to find a pair that works well. You might be well advised to copy the Matchless/Badcat approach, or anyone else that sells mismatched 2x12s

Yeah, i'm thinkin that the Neo may overwhelm the 1265, but that's what trial and error is for :)
