Title: EVM12L + another speaker
Post by: rvf263 on January 15, 2011, 07:23:03 AM
Is anyone pairing their EVM12L with a different type of speaker in a 2x12?

I have a Eminence Legend G128 and a Red White and Blue 8ohm but I'm not sure if either of these would be compatible with the EVM.

All speakers are 8ohm.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I mixed an Ev with a Celestion g1265 for a while and got somewhat good results. The Ev did have more presence although.

It's hard to find one, but a JBL G125 would pair very well with an EVM 12l.  The JBL has more mids and a smoother top end distorted, it has a 12 1/2 lb. magnet structure, 3" aluminum flattened ribbon wire VC, and is similar in efficiency and wattage rating.

Thanks for the quick responses.

What specs are important when comparing a speaker?

The only specs I see for the EVM are:

200w power handling

Frequency Response 80Hz - 7kHz (at -10 db down)

16lb. magnet

I can't find the sensitivity rating for the EVM12L anywhere.

If it were me, I'd go with a JBL D-120 or something like that. I think it's more important to pair the EV with a speaker of similar efficiency so neither one is more prominent than the other. The EV is so linear, and the JBL is more middy, I think they would be a nice compliment.

I've mixed an Ev with a JBL d120 with poor results. The JBL's break up weird compared to the Ev. Not that someone else may like this config. They are both great speakers for d-style amps. I tried a 2x12 Hardtruckers cab with JBL's @ one point and it was great. Tonetubby Hempcones are also awsome with my 100w HRM.

Try to find either any EVM-12S or an alnico EV-SRO.  I run a 12L and 12S and they sound great together.

So how do I know what the similar efficiencies are?
Most speakers have the specs available, EV only seems to have the power handlling and the frequency response.

I would think the sensitivity (db) would be important?

Yep, as far as efficiency the JBL G125 I previously suggested is rated at 102db 1 watt 1 meter...the 15" version is the G135 and it is rated 104db.  Either speaker is pretty phenomenal.  Just hard to find...

So what's the sensitivity db rating for the EVM12L?

Anyone?

I found a good deal on another EVM12L so I'm just gonna pair those together.

However, its a bright speaker, that can have a piercing high frequency range if you don't use a dumblelater.

I've never found EV's to be bright at all!
I've used them in all my Mesa Boogie amps, and a Fender or two.... They are the most neutral speaker I've ever used. Now JBL's.... THOSE can be a bit bright in general...

Maybe your EV is more 'played in' and mellow than my particular EV12L. I actually like my EV12L copy, an Eminence Kappa Pro, much better.

Thanks for that link! I swear I searched the web over and over looking for that info, I wasn't even close to finding that. Geeeez!

I got a good deal on a Fuchs verbrator so I'll be using that with my rig.

I don't have really have diverse speaker experience, but felt no need to look further, I got out of the gate with EVM12L in a 1x12 and used in conjunction with a Two Rock Sig 1x12 cab loaded with 12-65R....both 8 ohms and ampo set at 4 ohms - I love my tone.

P.S. I have a 50-Watt OTS.

i second tommy
i have a 16ohm EV12L in my 50W combo HRM and a celestion g12-65 in a 112 box (16 ohm as well)
the EV dominates in volume...but they two together are nice because the G12 has just enough warm mids to complement the EV
