I was ready to pull the trigger on one of Nik's Plexi 50 Bass models, and then I heard SPM72's Youtube Overtone videos. I was just floored.

I'm wondering whether the Overtone can cop a close approximation of the Plexi high gain tones. I plan on running the amp through my Avatar open back with G12H Heritage and Vintage 30. Thanks.

I never think of Plexi's as high gain unless you are goosing it with a pedal at ear bleeding volumes.  The Overtone will get you all the gain you want at any volume level.

i assume by high gain you are talking about AC/DC stuff? Master Volume jcm800 hot-rodded? I don't think the dumble design will give you that but you could put a plexi OT in it and run it with EL34s and it would be closer.

I didn't think that was what this amp was all about...?

I think the Overtone can do the JCM 800 better than a Plexi or JTM 45 (AC/DC).  Give me a pointy guitar, an Overtone with the OD trimmer up, some verb and Delay and we can do some hair metal.

the OT gets plenty of gain, im throwing two tube screamers on top of the overdrive channel and it really cooks.

there is plenty of gain on tap, but the amp doesn't sound like a marshall. It can certainly rock though.

I really like the Zvex Box of Rock in front of the Overtone. (to me) I can get tweed od on the clean channel and what I'd call plexi sounding tones on the od when boosting the amp with the BOR.

You might not agree but that's how I hear it.
