Title: Do all of the D-Lator clones sound the same?
Post by: hurtwoodec on October 10, 2011, 08:52:55 AM
Hey all, just a quick question re fx loop buffers. Do they all sound the same? Or why would you pay $500 for a Glasswerks one when Niks is $250?

Why would you? If you don't need an extra $250 and you DO need Glasswerks written on your loop buffer. ;)

I went with the Fuchs Verbrator, and luv it! Simple, sounds amazing, small, serial, parallel, and I got a decent price.

Oh ya I forgot about these. Very nice, have heard nothing but good things about them, and the built in serial/parallel function is nice!

I ended up with a Glaswerks Matchbox and the only advantage is the stereo out option.
I got one used but I still ended up paying $400.00, I didn't want to wait and had gigs lined up and wanted to use
my OTS. He also has a version with reverb on board which I might pick up as well but overall I think they all
sound the same. The Glaswerks also has an extra 12AX7 but I couldn't tell you if it makes a difference since I've only
owned the one unit and have nothing to compare it to other then clips on the web.

Does the Fuchs pedal have the same tone shaping ability as the C-lator?

I'm not a fan of any Fuchs products due to many problems with the company, I bought 2 amps and 2 of the loops pedals
all of them broke down or arrived non functioning. I was treated like garbage by Andy and his company and was actually paid
off to keep my mouth shut after my last Verbulator completely crapped out on me. you should see the emails I saved when i was going back and
forth with Andy after my $4,000.00 Fuchs TDS broke down twice on me and I finally had to get a refund.
So in short I would stay away from anything that jack ass produces. Go with a C-ulator or the Qiunn Loopalator.
There is a used Quinn on the gear Page for $375.00 which is a great deal and Shad backs up his stuff.
I'm having him build me a SDO right now.

That sucks! With a 5 year warranty and so far have about a 50 hours use without a problem, if it fails i guess i will end up building my own or  buying one from Glasswerks and getting my money back from Andy.  I was not into the rack mounted
Dlator as this is my 13 year old son's rig. Verbrator does exactly what i needed.

Yeah the rack thing is really a pain in the ass for just blues jams so I just picked up a small Fender Combo
and I use a Carl Martin Plexitone for my drive sound.

I did the combo thing in the beginning and being that most of his playing is outdoors or in a bar jam the combo's just wouldn't cut it. He was in a band last year, but the keyboard players mom was a control freak and they had no clue on how to set up a PA as you can see in the video. She pretty much tried to push me out of being part of the group. So my wife and i had to pull him out. Plus the keyboard player was much older then the rest of the band and it just wasn't going to work out. The HRM is so amazing i don't think i will ever buy another combo, plus the infinite tube rattle.

Now I know what's wrong with todays music. What ever happened to a rock band being about almost anything but what someone's mother thinks. ??? Something is not right unless you're driving your parents crazy. ;D

If I was that keyboard player I would be feeling like a real smuck. Besides looking out of place "size wise", if my Mom was dictating how the band I was in was going to be, I would crawl in a hole.

Well anyway, hope your son finds a new band.

Agreed, I don't own any Ceriatone products anymore as I have an Artist Endorsement with Quinn Amps and have been helping design new D-style amps with Shad but the statement above is true, Shad is the best in the biz when it comes to a warranty, he'll service anything with no time limit (lifetime warranty). Also Shad can build a Dumbleator in a half rack size enclosure about 1/2 of the footprint of a 1u rack space. Which is great because having a Rack can be a real pain in the ass, if you're a touring musician or just a regular gigging around town type a guy. Just throw it in the back of the headcase and go.

One thing that I didn't like about the C-lator is the quality of the rack case, it was kinda flimsy compared to the other ones I've owned or still own (Quinn Q-loop, Mill Creek Audio Creekator, Bludotone Loop-a-lator, Glaswerks Matchbox)

Shad's a good friend of mine and I'm thrilled I'm finally having him build me an amp.
I'm bummed he he moved to AZ it was great having him 20 miles away.
