Hi guys
I thought I'd give you a rundown of my "new" amp setup.

I use:
- 2xTungSol 12AX7, 1 Sovtes 12AX7LPS PI,2 TAD 6L6WGC-STR
- one of Erwins Dumblelators (serial)
- a TubeTown cab with 2 G12-65's

I haven't been a 100% happy with the clean channel of my OTS (May 2008 specs). I felt it sounded a bit "in your face" with to much " emphasis" on the attack of the note.
Also for my taste the amp had a bit of a dark (mid?) blanket over the sound. It lacked a bit of top end sparkle. Erwin did put a 67pf bright cap over de Master Volume, but that diodn' t seem to work well with my OD sound. The only thing that worked was turning my Presence all the way up top 9. The PAB switch was "unusable" because it sounded to boxy/nasal. Both in clean and OD.

I listened to a lot of clips on YouTube and got the impression that possibly the Bluesmaster cleans were more my cup of tea. Not enouigh cash to buy one unfortunatly.
I had been discussing this with Erwin and somehow/somewhere he dug up a layout which combined Bluesmaster cleans and OTS OD.
So he rebuilt my pre-amp and I must say I have been realy happy with the result. (Haven't tried it at gig level yet).
The amp now
- has a smoother attack (less in your face)
- has a "sweeter" sound with more high end
- even more sustain. Notes seem to bloom up (like a natural compression)
- OD has that nice thing where it almost feeds back
- the PAB is usable
- amp is bright enough without the use of bright switch of tons of of presence

Erwin didn't change the PI so it still has enough headroom

For me Erwin is the Dumble from Holland. Can't thank him enough.

When I get the courage I'll post a clip.

Greets and a Happy New Year to all

Steven

Steven; thanks!
But I'm not the Dumble from Holland. Just trying to perform what I've learned over the years.
The idea was yours; Bluesmaster clean with Non-HRM overdrive. My thought was; well let's try that. Only cons; time consuming because there are no layouts, schematics etc. So partly one has to tweak till it sounds good.

When the amp was at my place I made a clip; http://soundcloud.com/erwin_ve/room335

Happy holidays!

Erwin, I've never been able to get soundcloud clips to play in either FF or IE. I have just updated the Flash player from 10.0 to 10.1 and it still does nothing. Its not just your clip either, others I have tried won't play either.

Hi erwin_ve,
I have a early 2008 50 watt ods which I have upgraded to a 100 watt with Mercury magnetics transformers, but I have never been happy with the od sound and the clean sound is not as clear as I would like. I would appreciate it if you could show me some of the mods you did to get that sound. I also use a heritage 2 x 12 cab with  g12-65 speakers.

Got it working now, one of my FF extensions was preventing it. Nice tone, lovely playing. I have to say I wish mine sounded like that.

Interesting that someone else's first impression is the same as mine.  (I have the "New OTS 50W" topic from a few days ago).  I know everyone says you need to play these amps for awhile.  Granted I don't have a lot of time on mine, but have never had an issue with any other amps.

How complex are the changes?  I would be very grateful if I could see the schematic changes you made.  Seems like mine sounds like your used to.

thanks

It's a time consuming operation; about 4 hours. If you're comfortable with reading schematics(no lay-out!) you should be fine. Let me know; I can e-mail the schematic.

Erwin's clip sounds incredibly good!

But bad for GAS! Feels like I want another OTS!

The playing is stellar too. Erwin is an excellent gitarist and a great instructor. I know that for fact: he's desperately trying to teach me some twice a month for 5+ years!

And he put me on that OTS fever too!

Cheers
