I understand that they are there to roll off some high end and smooth out the OD. I think I remember reading that gain is increased some without them. I have a HRM which doesn't have them. It does seem to have rawness that I don't hear in the regular OTS. Whether that translates to more OD based on your opinion is hard to say.
