Title: Compliment to Bassman Blackface
Post by: neilslade on January 01, 2010, 07:03:42 AM
So- I'm getting close to taking the plunge--  some variant of the Overdrive special....

I have a VERY very nice 75 Fender Bassman 50 in a 1X12 cabinet, modded to blackface specs, with a Celestion speaker- done by Fat Willie in Denver Colorado.  A very nice classic amp in a combo cabinet I built myself.

I don't play out any more, just at home and record.

I would like something to compliment ownership of the Bassman- no sense in getting something that close to it.

So- someone make a recommendation per all the variants of the Overdrive--  HRM? sounds like the most versatile off the bat.

Here's all the difference

Some say the 1st generation silver panel Dumble ODS's were the "easiest to play"
They have a very rich singing quality compared to with the Hrm you have to be a very "touch sensitive" player to get everything out of the amp .Both are great amps to play although. The Hrm is some what the most versatile of them ,all depends what your after (good clean,or good OD) The HRM can have both but in a very subjective way.All the different generation's of amps will definitely reflect on that final decision so I would advise you to listen to all the clips you can,and do some serious homework. These amps are capable of alot of genre's/style's.

I play mainly Strats and Teles and in my exprience you can get very nice clean tones with both low plate and high plate skyliners (like the OTS) with the lowplate skyliners (100k/1.5k on V1 and V2) having a tad better clean tones.

Before I got into Dumbles, I thought that my old Bassman head, was the epitomic of clean and blues  tones. Now I think its got too much unusable low end and top end as well as a lack of middle tones, which is why the Tubescreamer (a mid boost monster) is so popular with Fenders.

I my opinion 80s and 90s Dumble are designed like Fender (blackface and silverface) should have been in the first place.
