Title: Buzz when Bright Switch off Post by: jhyatt2012 on March 07, 2012, 10:54:02 PM I've just finished my OTS build and it sounds amazing! I do have two issues though.
1. When toggles are set to bright=off deep=off and rock=on, I get a horrible buzz in the clean until I dime the preamp volume. When the preamp is on 10 the buzz goes away. No noticeable buzz in the overdrive. 2. I get a pretty good hiss in the distortion regardless of my settings.Y Ive checked solder joints and everything "looks" to be ok. I'm a total newbie and this is my first build so I'm learning. Title: Re: Buzz when Bright Switch off Post by: SoundPerf on March 08, 2012, 08:17:09 AM I would double check all the wiring in the first stage of the of the preamp and around the switches and proper component placement. And probably first, make sure that the level pot is good.
When you say you are a newbie. Do you mean newbie to amp building to newbie to electronics and soldering in general? What are the chances tht you overheated a pot or switch? And then OTOH a solder joint can look mechanically good but be cold. Title: Re: Buzz when Bright Switch off Post by: jhyatt2012 on March 12, 2012, 06:25:55 PM Newbie to amp building, but not soldering and electronics. Have a way to go in the amp building. Re-wired some of the pots (including the preamp volume) this weekend. I had to substitute some of the RG174 on a couple of the pots. Newbie mistake #1 - had originally wired the grounds on the RG174 jackets incorrectly. Got new cable in, rewired the substituted cable with the new and Voila! Problem solved. I had considered overheated toggle switches too, but they were ok. Thanks for the reply.

Sounds like you're on your way. Simple mistakes are always PITA. ;) The other day I was repairing a effect pedal and the LED indicator was relying on getting it's ground from a mechanical connection that only is connected when the pedal is put together. I wasted a good 1/2 hour until the palm to the forehead. |
