Title: Best Speakers for 4x12 cab with a HRM
Post by: Nairbr on January 12, 2010, 12:37:00 AM
I scored a early 80's Marshall 4x12 cab yesterday for $50, it needs a lot of work but the guy gave me new black tolex & salt 'n pepper grill cloth in the deal.

The cab has been sanded back and I need to make a new front baffle board (the old one is cracked beyond repair) and need to get 4 new casters and some gold piping but the rest of the hardwear is there and in good knick.

It is loaded with 2 x G12M-70's and 2 x G12T-75's which are all in serious need of reconing and I don't think I would bother and prefer to replace them with something better.

Any suggestions on speakers that would match a HRM would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Brian

Nice score On the cab......I would save the speakers.Who knows what the next trend will be with guitar players ;D . It really depends on how much your budget is,and what your taste is in speakers.

One option would be to get some Warehouse guitar G-12-65 clone's. They are cheap and sound great with the HRM.

Another would be to invest the money and buy 4 EvM-12's,pricey so be on the lookout for a bargain with them. You will have one heavy ass 4x12 too ;D

The Ev's have killer cleans while the Warehouse speakers are great with OD. I have 1 of each in a 2x12 and it covers a lot of basis. That could be an option too, mixing speakers. Some say that it sounds weird and others love it.

Try a bunch of different speakers although because your HRM will sound different than the next guys. Listen to as many clips as possible and ask questions before you make a decision based on your taste .

I have also heard good things about any NEO magnet speaker, they are super light and can roll with the big cats as far as cone breakup, efficiency ,and other speaker traits. Good Luck!

And the winner was - WGS 4 x ET65's
Even with the high shipping costs, it was still cheaper than enything else.

I'm going to mod the cab interior with a dividing baffle so it will end up as double 2 x 12 and run another head into the other side as soon as I can decide which other head to buy of Nik.

You should seal one and port the other.........It will give you a full range response.

I was going to do it with my 4x12 but I sold it and downsized, now I'm using a 2x12 with a g1256 and a Evm12-l and it sounds great. I take a 1x12 loaded with a g1285 for my grab and go cab for like open mics and all that other small jazz.

Here is what I drew up, Its just kind of a rough draft. Good starting point though

  "Possible incarnations of a d-style 4x12"

(# 4 is a little whacky but would be quite interesting to say the least)
