Title: Awful Overdrive...
Post by: Drpoyer on January 02, 2011, 05:15:48 PM
Hi all
I just picked up a factory OTS with no mods.  Runing it as so:
2x12 Avatar w WGS ET65s (tried:  2x12 G12H30' 1x12 G65 and 2x10 weber c10n)
Fuchs verberator (not recommend adds brightness, big disappointment)

While the cleans are nice, albeit rather harsh on the top end, the OD is just awful.   I cannot coax anything but fizzy fuzz crap from the amp.  No singing sustain or harmonics that would be considered pleasing.  I have swapped tubes, checked bias and used numerous guitars.  I have not adjusted the internal trimmer...  What am I missing?  I have reviewed numerous settings, but with no luck!

have you burned it in for about 20 hours yet? It made a huge difference on my HRM Bluesmaster variant.

Yes. It's a couple of years old

+1 on that

I can only speak for my HRM Bluesmaster, but adjusting the OD trim takes my OD channel from mild to wild fuzzy fizzy craziness and everything in between. also don't forget the clean channel volume affects the OD channel and PAB can affect it as well

Are you using the Verbrator as a master volume? If not, try this:

Connect a modulation pedal (delay/chorus) to the Verbrator and the Verbrator to the fx loop of the amp. Put the Verbrator and the amp both on and be sure the modulation pedal is powered by a battery or adapter otherwise you won't get any signal through back to the amp. Pull the 'send' and 'return' knob so you can use it to control the overall volume. Put both knobs at 9:00 o'clock, take the amp off standby and raise the master volume on that till about 4. The overall volume now should be just right for home use. My OTS is unmodified at my settings are: pre amp 7, bright off, deep off, rock, treble 4, mid 6, bass 4, od level 5, ratio 5, master volume 4, prescence 7.5.

Though I hope to get my OTS modified eventually, I'm quite pleased with the sound. Only the Verbrator adds an constant audible hiss... something with the decay knobs on it.... needs to be modified as well...

Put the OD trimmer at say 10 o'clock, I don't think it really changes the character of the amp, just the amount of gain...

Hope this helps!

Check if the plate, cathode and grid wires are "touching" the heater wires. If so; move them(plate, cathode, grid) up a little (1cm) so they won''t touch the heater wires anymore. This is often the biggest problem regarding the fuzzieness.
