Title: anyone use transformers other than stockers? Post by: hombre on December 07, 2008, 10:16:13 PM So I think we can all agree that this is a GREAT amplifier with some amazing tones inside. But I can't help but wonder what kind of improvement would be seen by going with mercury magnetics or another type of transformer. Anyone do any experimenting?

They sound fabulous, btw, but I have no idea how much better (or how similar) they sound to the stock metal.

On all following amps I've used Hammond throughout. They are fairly cheap and sound great. I can't hear a difference between a MM and a Hammond. Post by: Nairbr on August 17, 2011, 12:43:37 AM I have replaced my stock OT Trannie in my 50w OTS HRM with a Magnetic Components #40-18001 which has M6 Iron.
The first thing I noticed was a bit more woodier tone in the clean channel and smoother lead channel. The tone controls seem to be a bit more responsive too. Not a massive change but certainly worth investigating Title: Re: TDS transformers Post by: kg6epv on August 31, 2011, 11:53:41 PM Hi, I know a few people have used TDS transformers for their builds, and they have loved them, so far, right now we are waiting to hear back on the 100W OTS, (I am pretty sure he will love them in the 100W'er) and the 50W OTS have been out for a while, the people that used them, loved them for the 50W'ers. the choke. The amp had been in a fire, but the iron was fine. No burn-in needed! They sound great. For output tubes, I'm using the original output tubes from my 1964 Black Face Twin Reverb- they are GE 7581As, and they sound great in the OTS - better than they did in the Twin! |
