Title: any pre tubes recipe other than Tung Sols?
Post by: whitewave on February 11, 2008, 07:50:23 PM
the subject says it all
I wonder if someone tried different pre tubes.
I'm going to buy a couple of Svetlana winged C EL34 for the power section, so I'd like to read any suggestions about pre tubes to try something different.
For example, I'm looking for a warmer sound, especially on cleans.  Even if I'm still in deep love with this amp.

 Thanks.

Those Tung Sols are pretty good.  I've tried Mullards, Brimar, Amperex, Syl's, Matsushitas, JJ's in various combinations and have found the Tung Sols to be just as good.  I settled for a Mullard in V2 for "mojo" but I really can't find much sonic advantage for using NOS tubes in THIS amp.

Anyone had any luck with smoothing out the highs on the overdrive by swapping preamp tubes?

I've been trying out some JJs. They have less gain than than the tungsols but seem to to be less harsh.

Can anyone enlighten me on which tube is V1, V2 and what is the 3rd pre-amp tube for (inverter?).

I am assuming that the first tube on the left (closest to the chassis wall) is the V1 and the one in the middle is a V2.

thanks

Marin

PLEEEEEEZE let me know how that works out!   Have you played with the OD trimmer yet?

V1, V2, V3 and V4, V5 where V1 is directly in front of the footswitch.  V2 is OD and V3 is the PI.

A JJ in V2 will knock off a lot of edge but IMO too much.  It really is quite dramatic.  But then again I'm using a RWandB which is a bit of a dull speaker to begin with.

Thanks. Have you perhaps tried putting a JJ and using the trimmer to compensate for the loss of OD?

I'm going to be trying a TAD select (JJ) tube in the overdrive section, and mess around with the trimmer a bit...after that, i might use a different snubber cap to tame a little of the highs on the OD....
anyone done any of this???

rock on,

jeff

Sure. 330K snubbers on V2 "dumb" the OD down a bit.....  Also, a 220k in place of the 150k resistor in the OD entrance (before the trimmer) works.  If you keep your master down you could clip out the 15pf master cap.  These are just a few of the many ways to tame the edge.

Chris-Keep the master down-do you mean keeping gain up and master down? and what happens if you keep the master higher what effect is there.
Have you done this to your rig? couldn't you just use a cooler tube in V2. I am not a tech, but I know how to solder-uh oh-will probably need a little guidance when and if I decide to tweak anything.
