Has anyone tried 2- G12H30's in a 2X12 cabinet with an Overtone Special?

If so, what kind tone do you get from that set-up, and more specifically, how are the high frequencies?

I've bought an OTS used that should arrive next week sometime and I have a 2X12 Avatar semi-open cab set up like this. I'm just wondering in advance what kind of tone I might expect.

If they are original Rolla H30, then you’ll get loud, big Lows and mild high/mids.
Not much harmonic content but good overall tone. I think it will go well with the OTS (I guess it is 50 w and not 100 !!!).

Well, they're actually the re-issues, so they won't have that same character.

At 100db efficiency they'll still be loud I'm sure, but I was wondering about the kind of balance I might expect accross the tonal spectrum.

I know that the Vintage 30/G12H30 combination works well, and I may end up doing that. But in the meantime, I'll be using the two G12H30's together.

In a week or perhaps a little longer, I'll know first hand...

I think I mentioned in another one of your threads that I have a 2 x12 with V30/G12H30.
When I bought the cab it seemed like all the buzz was bout the V30 and what great speaker it was. But, having played through each one of those speakers individually, I found the G12H30 to be a much better sounding speaker on its own than the V30. Actually, it sounded so good that when I was looking to put 1 x12 cab together, I decided to use the the Eminence Wizard which is a very similar speaker at 75w and 103dB efficiency. I and I'll tell you I don't miss the 2x12 cab at all when I have to use the 1x12 box. BTW the wizard is the the speaker in the Carr Viceroy (formerly Vincent) and that is the best sounding small combo amp I have ever heard.

Combining the G12H30 with brighter speaker makes sense since you will cover a wider frequency band, but the bottom line is what sounds good to you.

Thanks, John. I do recall your post in the other thread.

Yeah, the G12H30/V30 is the most talked about combination I suppose, and I'll most likely have that combo eventually since I have an "extra" G12H30 along with the two in the 2X12 cab I have.

The OTS head is scheduled for delivery Friday, so I'll have some first hand (or first "ear") analysis soon.

My ultimate goal of late is to get down to about three really good amps in head form, and several cabinets that I can mix and match with them. I'm selling off the "almost there" amps I've collected to make room for just three "fully there" amps (plus my modded Valve Jr for Marshally practice at volumes that won't cause the neighbors any heartburn).

The plan starts with the OTS, next an 18 Watt w/EF86, and probably a 5F6A Bassman to round it all out (the latter two I hope to build from Nik kits). Since I already have 2-Mojotone MP12RHD alnico's, 2-Weber C12N's, the 2-G12H30's, plus the "extra" G12H30, about all I'd probably want in addition would be a V30 (or WGS Veteran 30), and perhaps a pair of WGS ET65's. I can't imagine anything I wouldn't be able to cover with that and a good SM57 or two. I've even collected all the NOS tubes I'll need for the 18 Watt and the Bassman (plus NOS pre-amp tubes for the OTS) Heck, with a good bass speaker/cabinet the Bassman could even double as what is was originally designed for...bass guitar (they actually use them for bass...?  Grin)

I'm tired of being just a common street Gear Wh*r*...it's time to move up to a more sophisticated level... Wink

Now if I can only live long enough to see my plan through to completion...and stay solvent long enough as well... :Smiley
