Title: Westlabs built for Matchless to their specs VS Ceriatone Output Transformer
Post by: TeleCasterAndTubes on February 07, 2009, 06:11:03 PM
Hi,

I Have put some sound clips on youtube comparing the two.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwC6vkOEuQY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyYLnKksWdQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HutsE-Z5JwY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTnWF4K50fM

Let me know what you think......
Every video has 2 parts with P1 Ceriatone P2 Westlabs

Some technical information.
Westlabs 15 W
21,65 V Primary 1 V secundary.
21,65 x 21,65 = 468,7225 x 8 = 3749

Ceriatone 18W
44,83 V Primary 1 V secundary
44,83 x 44,83 = 2009,7289 x 8 = 16077

I do not have a tone generator, so i only used a Variac.

See http://akavalve.blogspot.com/2008/12/champion-600-output-transformer.html (not my blog)

Regards Robert.

Wow that's a nice comparison.
It's difficult to judge by a YT vid, but here's my thoughts.

In all vids the westlab is more articulate and has nicer highs.
The last full power vid clearly shows it's too much for the ceriatone tranny.

The Westlabs OT is definitely more open with nicer high end detail and more bass as well.
Ceriatone OT sounds somehow congested I would say.

The test setup was the same for both OTs, right?... same amp, tubes, settings...

I was hoping to hear no difference at all, being as I have just completed my DC-30 build (its with my tech now getting tested and powered up), but unfortunately that was not the case. The last clip was the clincher.

yes, same amp, tubes etc. I was a bit surprised the first time I played the amp with the Westlabs, the sound was totally clean when in contrast the Ceriatone had already quit a bit of breakup with the same settings.
So the only thing that is different is more volume from the preamp to get the same amount of breakup.

What also surprised me is the difference in primary impedance?

The DC30 has a different OT (30W) than the Creme Brulee (18W), so I'm not sure if you would hear the same difference in sound.

The OT does make a difference

Very well done, thanks for the comparison.

Hello,

The results of your winding ratio and reflected load tests on the two OT's is kind of surprising:

Some technical information.
Westlabs 15 W
21,65 V Primary 1 V secundary.
21,65 x 21,65 = 468,7225 x 8 = 3749

Ceriatone 18W
44,83 V Primary 1 V secundary
44,83 x 44,83 = 2009,7289 x 8 = 16077

I do not have a tone generator, so i only used a Variac.

It looks like both OT's have multiple secondaries (ie can choose 4 or 8, etc).  Just wonder of if you were consistent on the measurements.

thnks

yes, both sec. 8 ohms (The difference in specs surprised me too).
It is always possible that I made a mistake :-[, I could double check but that means disconnecting the OT again (If I have the time I'll double check).

Hi tele,

Wouldn't ask you to pull the OT just to measure it.   Which of the two, if either measured up close to the expectation for the power tube configuration in this amp?  Does this amp use two EL84's?   Either way, it comes down to the sound, and you put together a nice comparison.

thanks for posting

Yes two EL84 PP.
It's the Creme Brulee.
