Title: My little BF Champ 6L6 mod...
Post by: mcinku on November 01, 2007, 08:39:05 PM
I like my BF Champ so much I wanted to make it sound even bigger.
This mod is easy just a switch and a 330R 10W resistor...

Does the mod affect your tone much, if at all?

Actually it does... it's louder of course and the sound has changed as well. I would say that the bass response is different and the way how the amp goes into the drive has changed as well. I would say that with 6L6 there is more gain when pushed all the way. The grain pattern of the drive is different too, if you know what I mean.

I asked Nik if transformers could handle it and he said yes.

It's really not any problem at all with the output transformer or the B+ portions of the amp.  The problems can come from overloading the 6 volt heater winding in the power transformer because the 6L6 and especially EL34, KT88 etc draw MUCH MORE heater current than a 6V6.

This might not be any problem at all with the Ceriatone transformers but in a stock Fender or similar amp it can cause problems.

I'm running my Champ with 6L6 since I did this mod and I have no issue with the PT.
So I guess it is safe to say C-tone transformer can take it.

I doubt I would even consider this mod if I had an original Champ.

It's been a while isn't it... since I recorded anything. Lately I'm spending a lot of my free time behind my bench building stuff and fixing amps.
...but you're right, I need to grab my guitar more often and play the damn thing.
