Title: I'm digg'in my Lightning
Post by: poipounder57 on November 03, 2007, 06:59:28 PM
Yes I am...digg'in my Lightning!!!  All the EL84 chime and grind can be found in this amp.
I've got to get up to date and learn how to post some clips.  I'm a computer idiot ;D...just know how to turn it on and off :D  Maybe my lil grand daughter will show me how.

Hey man!

  Welcome!

Great to know that you dig the amp, thanks!

Cool on the clips. Would be good to populate the site.

Thanks!

Nik

poipounder, or any other lighting owners - do you have any sound clips you can share???

I'm on the verge of getting one of these things, but I need to know I'm on the right track!!!

Many thanks!

Sorry...I don't have any clips.  I can say this...the Lightning is a great sounding amp.  Cleans are just awesome...all the bells and chime you'd expect from el84's can be found in this sweet lil' amp.  It'll growl like a tiger and can purr like a kitten if you want it to.  All of my pedals sound great through it...but you may find youself not using them.  Backing off the guitars volume gets me chimey cleans...turning up the volume give me some sweet tube overdrive tones ;D  The Lightning is a 15 watter...this baby can get pretty loud.
Nik has posted some mods to the Lightning.  He said that it'll greatly improve the tone.  I haven't got around to updating my Lightning yet...hope to do it soon.  I've been spending what free time I have playing with my Overtone ;D nudder great amp from Ceriatone :chairdance:
Here's a pic of my tone machine...the 2X12 is loaded with a pair of Weber Rola clones.

Thanks poipounder. That's a great looking amp. I'm stuck between the Lightening and the Overtone - the Lightening is the ideal size and volume (and price) for me, but I can't help thinking the OT is the one I really want!!!

... tho I appreciate that they both sound pretty different! Both *umble- and *atchless-style amps sound great to me!

Hey Fuzz...for the price you can't go wrong with the Lightning.

Thanks poipounder - I'm probably going to get a Lightening with an fx-loop added by Nik (or myself if I buy the kit) for my delay and reverb. I tend to think they usually sound better after the gain stages on most amps.

Anyway, 15-watts is the ideal size for me as I mainly just jam with a drummer, bass and a couple of other guitarists... If it sounds anything like the DC-30 soundclips on this forum then I'm in for a treat. Thanks for your help.

Thanks poi. I'm just desparate to get an amp (almost any amp) as I've been 'ampless' since I sold my Hiwatt Custom a couple of months ago (for financial reasons)!

One last question. Is it loud enough to dial in clean sounds on the Lightening at band volume levels?

Sorry bout' your Hiwatt sale Fuzz...I think last month was rough for a lot of people.  Uncle Sam took my G.A.S. funds and didn't even say thank you >:(
I get some really nice cleans at band level...but it depends on your definition of band volume levels.  I've played in a band that played so loud...if you didn't wear earplugs your ears would start to bleed :o  (Just kiddin' on the bleeding ear)  I don't think I would be able to dail in a nice clean tone with that band.  With a band that plays at a decent volume I'd say yes to your question.
 It'll handle a small venue...say around 100-150 people.  Jus my 2 cents ;D

Thanks Poi - much appreciated!

Don't worry about that Hiwatt - in some ways I'm glad to see the back of it. It sounded nice but it was the heaviest 1x12 combo I have ever picked up in my life - possibly as heavy as a 2x12 Marshall Jubilee I once owned. Just thinking about it makes me tired.

Bring on the Ceriatone!  :chairdance:
