Title: V1 Tweaks -- any takes on running 12AY7? 5751??
Post by: 72sg on April 08, 2008, 08:58:30 PM
While waiting for my amp ...

Anybody tried a 12AY7 at V1 on the 45? I'm guessing this doesn't play well, since I haven't found a single forum thread about it. I figured I'd at least find a thread somewhere, even just to say "I tried this and it sucked" or something, but nada!

I just unloaded a booteek 60 watter (bassman-like) where stock V1 was 12AX7, and the mfgr didn't recommend going below a 12AT7, but I preferred the 12AY7 hands down. So ...

Anybody done this? Is increased current draw a problem? Plate load resistors okay? Any other subs work well, like 12AT7 or 5751? I plan to try a 12AT7 at V3, as that sub is pretty well discussed.  I'm really looking for the things that open the tone and reveal more wood and string, which usually includes some increase in headroom and less tight lows as the trade off.

It would make it more clean sounding then distorted. I like a JJ Tesla 12AX7 in that position.

It should run pretty clean.  Closer to the Tweed Bassman.  The JTM is a pretty clean, bluesy amp to begin with, so I would play it for a while before tweaking.  It is not the hot, rock machine that a Plexi is.

I think the lows will be tighter and cleaner. just swap tubes and see what you like. no problem w current draw
