Title: tubes for new jtm45
Post by: StringSkunk on January 31, 2010, 05:46:30 AM
Hey guys, i just ordered a JTM45 from Nik and thus i am new to these forums. Anyway, during the 4 weeks wait time i gotta order some tubes to put in this baby, im definitely going with the classic KT66, GZ34, and 12AX7 tubes combo, but i am so torn between what brands to buy. What brand tubes do you guys have in your amps and how do you like them as compared with any other brands that you have tried?

My JTM45 came with JJ pre-amp valves and (I think ) Tung Sol KT66's  I've since messed about with NOS pre-amp valves and currently I'm back with the JJ's because of reliablity issues with the NOS stuff.  I now have some Genalex Gold Lion KT-66's and to be honest they sound no different to the valves that came with the amp, Nik doesn't use rubbish ;)

If I were you I would just get whatever Nik is currently using delivered along with your amp, you'll save some money, and a load of time researching which tube is best, and your new JTM-45 will sound amazing :)

aahhh i shouldve known better, but its too late i already ordered it without the tubes yesterday haha so im stuck with the task of ordering a bunch. I'm probably gonna go with the Gold Lion KT66's, but am still undecided on the preamp and rectifier tubes. Im probably gonna go with JJ's or Tung Sol's for each, any objections to either of these? and also, do i have to get a special balanced tube for the phase inverter, and does it really matter if i get matched triodes or not?

A few months ago I would have said JJ's but there appear to have been some quality issues so tung sols are probably your best bet.  Alternatively just drop Nik an email asking to up your original order, he's good with stuff like that, I'm sure he'll be more than happy.

If you get the amp with the valves it'll be all biased and ready to go, if you get the valves yourself you have the job of biasing when you get it too

hey guys thanks for all the great info so far, keep it comin'. im also wondering, what is the benefit of using different tubes in different preamp spots, aka valve 1, 2, etc... what exactly do each of these do and what do they contribute to the amp's tone? im pretty much in the dark about that right now, other than that one of them is a phase inverter, and im not even really too sure what that means haha
