Title: Newbie question JTM 45 / 50
Post by: zeestar on January 25, 2008, 03:43:10 PM
Hi all , im new to this forum so bear with me :-) ,, im after a single channel valve head and im very interested in the JTM45 / 50 ... i just have a few questions which i hope you guys can help me with .
First , how much clean headroom is available on these amps ??? is there more on the 50 ?? is there a tone difference between the  two ??
I play professionally so i need an amp thats going to cut it live .. i currently use a 1990 Les Paul standard into Boss TU-2 - Morley Bad Horsie - Fulltone Fulldrive 2 (anniversary model) - Tc  Electronics Nova Delay - Fulltone Choral Flange - Amp (mesa single rectifier.. for sale atm .. lol )  - Cornford 2x12 Cab with Vintage 30's

I really want the Cornford MK50 mk2 head .. but at £2000 its just too expensive .. lol  and the Mesa just sounds crap ..

Hope you guys can help

Even a 30 watt amp has quite a bit of clean headroom and can be heard on stage. 100 watt tube head isn't really all that, its only 3 db louder than a 50 watt head, but then its probably better if you're one of those types who plays cleans all the time.

You could also get a Fender twin reverb, I heard those got tons of clean headroom.

I really like the clean sound on a Fender twin reverb.. but I hated the fact that it won't distort no matter what, even if you turn it to intolerable volume. I guess you could use a twin reverb and a pedal...

the amount of clean headroom is about the same. the 50n is abit brighter and more aggressive than the 45. it has a bit more distortion and is a little tighter. the 50 is more rock while the 45 is more blues. if you play in a loud 2 guitar band, I'd recommend the 50

I also am in a twist about whether to get the 45 vs the 50. Is the 45 only 45 watts? I play indie rock in the vein of at the drive in and head automatica, so having just a good overdrive isnt going to cut it. I  use alot of delay and need alot of definition for hammer on/pull of type lines. I play a fender jazzmaster and  a custom First Act Delia.
any recomendations?
lookin to place my order thursday  ;D

The JTM45 was originally considered about 30 watts, and today, due to higher wall voltages and other factors they're typically considered about 35 watts.
