Title: New 2550 project starting
Post by: T Wilcox on April 25, 2011, 04:08:24 PM
Hello all
Been a little boring around here on the british side of the forum, so I went ahead and ordered a 2550 kit #1 from Nik and will try and document this build as best as I can since there is not alot of posts on this amp!

So far I have the 2550 pack#1 kit hopefully shipping this week.
Ordered OT and PT from Magnetic components

PT = Plexi45/50 watt  part# 40-18054

OT = Jcm 800/Jmp50   part# 40-18025

Choke = 10henry choke from Mercury Magnetics.

I have not purchased tubes yet and would like to hear any recommendations from current 2550/2555/2203/2204 owners if they are out there.

Will start posting pics and stuff once all parts arrive!

Todd

Still waiting to hear when it will ship!
Got the choke already and the OT & PT are in transit.
So Nik if your reading this, Hurry up and ship ;D

Thanks for posting those settings! I am a fan of JB!
I had never even heard of a dumble until I read his dual amp tone recipe on the JB forum, and his tone has inspired me to get the Jube as well!
If I had all the gear he had I still wouldnt sound like him though.

The only amp I could see myself needing after this is maybe a Yeti or Chupacabra so I can get the metal tone. I am hoping Nik makes them as kits in the future. He said maybe!

OK I think that's it!
I still have a little tidying up to do!
I ended up getting a pair of matched SED =C= EL-34's
Will use JJ 12ax7's until I can get some better pre's
Most of the solid wire you see inside the amp is 18AWG solid that I reaped from lighting ballast's ( It's easier for me to work with ).

If anyone has any questions or suggestions please speak up!

Thanks
Todd

Thank you Plasticvonaband, I appreciate the compliment!
Now the only trick will be to power up without letting the smoke out of the components:)

Nice Job!
Thanks for taking the time to document all of this.
I wonder where Nik gets those 600 Volt caps from.?

How does it sound?  :)
It sounds great!!!
Had a wiring problem with the OT primary and had to de-solder and swap primaries.
I've heard builders experience this often, it made a crazy as sound when wired wrong!
But since I got that fixed early this morning Ive put about 4 hrs on the amp so far.
I have tried the settings you recommended and WOW.
I Likeee ;D
It will definitely compliment the ODS I have. Just gotta get a good ABY now!

Cant really compare the SED's with anything yet!
Only other amp I have with El34's is the JSX and they are crappy GT's that really need to be replaced but thats another project!
I have been tuberollin with the OTS and so far am liking the NOS stuff.
I wont know about the SED'd really until I get some proper 12ax7s pushin em.

This amp drips frickin Rock and Roll. It's got that Low end Thunk that Marshalls are known for!
