Title: v1 tubes? Post by: anxiousmofo on November 01, 2007, 05:44:21 AM Howdy folks:
I have a DC-30 clone on its way to me. Any current owners have recommendations on V1 tubes/ experiences to share? Thanks in advance. A tip o' the hat to ye. Title: Re: v1 tubes? Post by: ampkits on November 03, 2007, 05:26:22 PM Hello,
I usually use the JJ with good results here. Definitely, tube varies a lot. NOS is nice if you can get it, or more importantly, have the dough to spare. My advice is to try as you can, as this is subjective. And when tube variability comes into play, would be a harder topic to discuss. Thanks! Nik Title: Re: v1 tubes? Post by: anxiousmofo on November 03, 2007, 09:53:47 PM Thanks, Nik. I am thinking NOS for v1, and was just curious what people found that hit the sweet spot for them. Tone is definitely subjective, no doubt!
Title: Re: v1 tubes? Post by: ampkits on November 04, 2007, 03:55:05 PM Hi,
I think lots of people use NOS for the EF86 tube instead. This seems to bring the most change. We can't stock NOS due to availability and price, sorry. Take it slow.. a NOS could suddenly come floating by when you least expect it. Like in old radios (those old ones had lots of Telefunken tubes!)! :) Thanks! Nik Title: Re: v1 tubes? Thanks, Nik. Title: Re: v1 tubes? Post by: Tonebuddy on November 20, 2007, 12:15:30 PM 5 1/2 months long tube rolling test;
I have tested about 30 different preamp tubes, and four power tubes... my personal taste for tubes are (from first to last) V1 Nos Mullard ECC83 (I61 batch very musical sounding) V2 Groove tubes 12AX7R2 (I think it is really a Sovtek 12AX7LPS long plate, which keeps the clean channel rhythm sound, particularly the bass and lower mid together and cuts off excessive highs). V3 NOS Mullard EF86 (silverplate) V4 Groove tubes 12AX7R2. Power tubes; NOS russian military grade 6p14p-EB 10000 hr long life with a good sound! (I have also tested my own Mullards, Siemens , JJ , Philips Miniwatt, Tungsram) Rectifier tubes; Two english made Philips GZ32. GZ32 gives a "rounder" sound -> britpop, country, country-rock and blues. Speakers in 2x12 4 Ohm open back cab; Scumback H55-8Ohm and a chinese Greenback-8Ohm I have gone trough them all, Celestion greenback,G12H30 Heritage, Celestion blues, Celestion lead, G12H100, G12- 75, Fane speakers and all possible combinations of these.... Guitar(s); Stratocaster Jimi Hendrix clone with Fender Voodoo (neck and middle) Lindy Fralin Vintage hot bridge pickup, ... and occasionally a Les Paul style Heritage H-150 CM This was my personal view of a good sounding DC-30. |
