Title: OT Pre amp tube sheild
Post by: XB9R on June 29, 2011, 10:50:02 AM
Has anybody bothered to put the shield in between the OT and the Preamp tubes? Or is it quite enough with out it? wondering if any body had any pics of a build with the sheild installed. read somewhere that this could have benefits to reduce hum, and the kits look like they are now supplied with a piece of thin aluminimum for this purpose, well mine was anyway.

Thanks Charmcolors, did you put yours the full lenght of the preamp tubes or did you only make it slightly larger than the width of the OT, Like what Nik has done on the StrayCat model?

Hi,

The shield is a requirement, I think.

Thanks!

Nik

If your in any doubt regarding the shield between the OT and Pre amp tubes just put it in, its easy enough to do before you get to far through the wiring. I ran the DZ30 amp without it to start with then put it in later, I really didn't notice any difference in noise with it in or out, wonder if its more down to lead dress than anything, maybe just an anomaly, Pic attached where you can see it placed in the amp.

I used a standup type OT so I guess that's why I didn't need the shield.  The only issue I had was a slight hum caused by running the two wires from the board to the Master pot too close together.  Once they were moved apart the amp was fine. I now have one of them cable tied to the mounting hardware for the power supply board. No chance of the hum creeping back in!!

I did mine a little differently to provide some shielding for the FX loop wires as well...

Hey.....you did a nice job.

Thanks!   ;)

It does.   ;D   I've tweaked a few components to even out the channel volume a bit (for my settings), improve the 'Cut' control and to get the PI / Master performing as I'd like.

Transformers are Drake AC-30.

Just building some high voltage transistor buffers / remote switchers for the loops now...
