Hey, this is some pics of my finished DC-30 clone.

Found a used Matchless Cabinet on Ebay so I put it in the Matchless.

Need to get a new faceplate and wire up the lights inside.

Original transformers I purchased from Gerald Weber of Kendrick Amplifiers.  He bought a Matchless DC-30 and took it apart.  He sold the original tranny's online as a garage sale thing.  I bought them in 1998 ish and have been storing them ever since.  They are Dated April 28, 1994...  Sozo caps, differnt Pilot Light and fuse holder.  I also had to add a shield by the Output Transformer.  I didn't get one shipped but Nik sent me one out when I ordered my Stray Cat amp....  What a kewel dude!!

It sounds sooooooo sweet...  All my friends now want me to build them one....

Looks sweet! i recognize those transformers, lol. Those are the good ones! I had hoped to meet Gerald Weber at this years LA Amp Show. I wanted him to sign my books that he wrote, unfortunately I didn't see him. It was nice to see Mark Sampson again, we had a nice chat over breakfast, he and my Dad hadn't seen each other in a while, what a nice guy. Let me know if I can be any help with transformers, Don.
All the best!  Bob, Transformer Design and Supply

Hey,

Just did a side by side comparison with my Dizzy 30 with TDS transformers and a real Matchless DC-30 and a Matchless Avalon.
At the same settings on the pots the amps sounded almost identical for the DC-30's....  With a little tweaking I could get the two to always sound the same.  I truly love my Ceriatone because it didn't cost me 4,000.00...  ROFLMAO!!!
The Avalon I had to repair for the guy as the pc board came loose and broke about 6 or so wires loose.  Not built the same as the DC-30.  It sounds good but nowhere as good as my DC-30 or Stray Cat does and Ceriatone are still cheaper!!

I have a DC30 and a stock DZ30
They do sound similar, and with the DC30 speakers, the DZ30 gets close, but the feel is a little different - the pots need diff settings for the same sounds too, so you can't just set the dials the same on both of mine
Certainly the sound difference is not worth the price difference to most people, but to be fair, a used DC30 cost me about 20-25% more than a new DZ30 plus a matchless 2x12. If anyone can duplicate the Matchless doping techniques, please tell me!

I was comparing the two chassis with the same speakers...  I have the same TDS transformers that the DC-30 has and I really believe that the transformers are a huge part of the mojo of any amp.  I know that Nik's trannys are also very close but the amount of iron and wire guages etc in the TDS is mind boggling.  Lets face it the transformer is the frequency response limiter and dynamics setter.   Along with the selection of interstage coupling capacitors.  Since almost all of the component values are identical, then the only differences I can account for would be pot tapers, components themselves, and the very small change in impedances from PTP and Terminal Board construction.  For service I prefer the Terminal Board versions any day!   Honestly I cannot say that the Matchless sounded better or worse.  They were trully too close...  You can't go wrong with TDS transformers...  I have used their transformers now with 3 of Nik's kits and I am having 2 more sets designed and made for a couple more of Nik's kits.
As far as the speaker mods that Matchless performs on their speakers, I totally agree...  I have read of what is done to the cone edges but have not read of anyone duplicating it...  For about the same price as raw Celestion Speakers, you can buy Matchless speakers online at their website...

sounds interesting. TDS don't list any prices on their site though - any costs you can tell us here?

btw the irony with Matchless speakers is that although they aren't much more than stock celestions in the USA, they are more than in the UK, and I would have to pay shipping & on the total another 23% tax on top to get those doped Celestions back to where they were made here in England, which is why I'm keen to dope some myself
