Title: Is the DC30 too harsh?
Post by: mikecazz on December 12, 2007, 08:22:56 AM
I was considering this amp for lighter rock, adult contemporary/jazz (Norah Jones) and some newer country (which is basically rock).  Even on the Matchless site there are few examples of pick strumming, mainly finger picking or lead licks and they tend to sound thin and harsh, not fat and round.

Am I looking into the wrong amp?

Hi,

The DC30 has a more sparkly tone to it's feel. It's not harsh but it has a brighter sound. Check out some of the videos in youtube. They are accurate. Talk to Nik and try to get the Overtone Special - this amp itself way way versatile. Will be your ticket to tonal heaven. I just tried one yesterday and I loved it.

Regards,
Andrew

What is the Overtone special based from and how would it directly compare to an DC30?

You should consider the 5e3 (tweed deluxe) or the Super.  I've got the little bf champ and it's fat and round...with some pedals it rocks nicely too.

I like it for rock. Can't get a really good jazztone out of it.
Maybe because I can't play jazz  ;)
Channel one is "vox" sparkle. Very good for country IMHO.
When turned up it rocks. (with a tubescreamer in front, it sounds nice)
Most of the time I play channel two.
This is really a rock channel. I LOVE that sound!
With my gretsch silver jet I can get this Malcolm Young kind of grind with the volume between 9 'O clock and 12 'O clock.
As someone pointed out allready, for jazz the 5E3 sounds better. (and can also rock very nice!)
And is not to loud. The DC30 is very loud.

Hope to have helped
Greetings from Belgium
Jesse

Folks!

Try this, I did it too, except the master volume pot change. Sounds full and pleasing with a Greenback and Scumback H75 (aged G12H30 clone) speaker.

And I did change the OT to a WestLabs 30W, with black standup end bells. I love the fullness of that OT.  Whatever you dial in, it won´t sound bad  ;D
