Title: DC-30 Preamp on a Sound City L120?
Post by: PaulS on September 14, 2010, 09:16:57 PM
Folks, I have a Sound City L120 with great Partridge iron and enough EL-34s to heat the house for the winter. It has maybe the worst pre-amp of all time.  Would it be feasible to graft a DC-30 front end on to the power section of this beast?  Thoughts?
Thanks,
-Paul

So, the project is underway.  Going with a an AC-30 front end with top boost.  Also doing a switch on the back to go from 1/3, 2/3 full house.  Should be done in about 3 weeks.

Wow!!!!!
6xEL34......!
Is this the amp with multi colored knobs on the front panel.?
This kind of job is pretty big, and not my forte by a long shot. But I do not see why it cannot be done. I am sure you will have some set-backs along the way. Only thing that comes to my mind at the moment is filtering. Does the L120 have some pretty big plate voltages.? If so, make sure your caps are plenty robust.
Do you know anything about those Partridge trannies.? Were they a special deal for this amp, or were they a common 100 watt item for both PT and OT.
Good Luck with this my friend. Take lots of pictures....... :)

The SoundCity AC-40/80/120 Top Boost is all done and sounding amazing.  Eric at Viking amps in Virginia did an amazing job and is a great guy.  More pics if you want them.
