Title: Compared to DC30 Post by: Tone Control on January 30, 2011, 12:49:16 AM I went looking for a Matchless 2x12 for my DZ30, and bought a DC30. Eventually, I got a Matchless 2x12 as well (slightly bassier and darker).
Comparing the DC30 and DZ30 through each pair of drivers, my observations are: The Matchless drivers make a lot of difference The DZ30 is close. Close enough to stand in for the DC30. The DC30 does sound/feel better. With either pair of drivers, the 3D sounds is there more with the DC30. my conclusions are: the DZ30 is probably close enough for most people, and good enough as a backup. You need to get close to the Matchless 2x12 drivers to get the sound. Celestion Golds aren't enough. Phil says they are too hifi. Was your DZ30 stock at the time of this post? I'm wondering if a transformer swap would close that gap. I've only played mine through a Thiele 1x12 with a Mesa branded EVM12L so far, but this is a sweet amp. I have the real Matchless mismatched pair coming UPS as we speak. Bill Wood is a great guy, by the way.
Man this amp rocks! Beautiful cleans and gnarly overdrive. I'd say the transformers helped the highs a little bit, but overall it could also be placebo effect. The speakers sound great, but I'd bet a normal set of Celestions would do the job just as well especially after some time went by. The PPIMV works great as per usual. I have a few amps with that type of master volume. I've been using it with my Kleinulator in the loop to great effect. My delay pedals didn't like the loop without the Kleinulator. Overall I'm extremely happy with this amp and am very glad to add her to the stable. It looks like going the TDS route could be quite a bit more expensive. @TriodeButDiode, since you've heard both do you have anything else to say about differences, do you think it's worth it? Thanks!
