Title: Can I use KT66s with Nik's standard Power transformer
Post by: BillyRocket on January 26, 2015, 02:21:20 AM

I am enjoying the amplifier that Nik built for me - it's sounds wonderful and his workmanship is outstanding!

I am writing to ask if the power transformer specs would allow me to run KT66 power valves, as I have read they draw a greater heater current than the 5881 / 6L6 valves.

I believe the KT66 draw 1.3 amperes and the 5881 / 6L6GB draw only 0.9 amperes for heater current.

I really don't want to fry the transformer just trying some different valves!

Cheers and thanks in advance for any advice - this is a GREAT amp!

I emailed Nik and he informed me that the PT is rated at 6A in these amps - and will cope with the extra current of KT66 tubes - it will of course run a little hotter but at the moment the heat from the Xformer is not great ( I have had several amps which seem to run much hotter including an English made Mxxxxxxx amplifier  ;)

Quick reply to my query from Nik - great service for great amps!

Rock on ;D
