Title: how "close" are the fender-like amps on the originals?
Post by: gitarrero on March 23, 2008, 06:07:24 PM
hi folks,

unfortunately there are no soundclips from all the amps of ceriatone's american-alike amps online.

so my question is: how close are the ceriatone amps on the originals from fender?

are they directly comparable anyway (I don't doubt the quality of the ceriatone models, I mean it more sound-wise).

thanks,

martin

There are a few youtube clips for the 5E3 @ the ceriatone site. Check the soundclips section.

yes that's true - but there are no soundclips of the other american-like amps.

so my question remains constant: are the ceriatone amps "close" to the fender originals?

because if so, I can check the originals in order to know in what directions the ceriatone amps sound.

Keep in mind these are clones of the Tweed Fenders, simpler Western Electric-based circuits with a lot more midrange and a lot less headroom than the later Blackface/Silverface Fenders.  "Tweed Tone" is fatter, more primitive, more organic and more lo-fi, it is more comparable to Marshalls than any other Fender amps and have little in common with the clean, scooped-mids signature "Fender Tone" of the Blackface/Silverface amps.  Tweed amps are not "Fender Tone" in cooler cloths.  So, when comparing make sure to compare to the correct '50'sd models or the correct Tweed RI's.

That said, these circuits are simple, and harder to screw up, and I feel all clones that stay true to the original schematic should sound similar enough for rock and roll.  Big differences can be made with different transformers, tubes or speakers.

I agree... and if you use similar cabs with similar speakers, you will get close enough.

Can't expect 5E3 to sound similar to the original through 4x12" celestion cab
 ;D

the circuits are prob accurate. but the cabs and chassis may be a little different

Hello guys (and gals...?), I'm new here.

I just purchased a 5e3, the one that is on YouTube demoed by palmiuga. It happens we live close....

I must say that its quite beautifully sounding.  I've been to a shop with my strat to try a fender reissue, and it's the same amp...except for the fact that i found the reissue a tad bit colder, just a little bit more honey on the ceriatone. I'm not able to say now where does the difference come from, both amps have been played in quite dampened and not very big rooms...

The Ceriatone I bought has a Tad cabinet and a Jensen Alnico 5 P12N, I wasn't able to check the Fender reissue....

Anyway it's a great amp, it's a bit difficult to stop playing once you're on!

I think you are infected with this tweed disease and there is no cure for it I'm afraid.
 ;D ;D ;)

Tubes are important too, so difference between those two amps could be the tubes as well.

Welcome to the forum.
 ;)

wait till you find the sweet spots! although its incredibly easy to use, wont take long of course.

i only just really started playing with the channels jumpered so im using the mic channel with a hint of the bright instrument channel and for my setup it really brings out some nice highs.

kinda annoying how it shakes my room which kills alot of bass notes but i just gotta find somewhere with better accoustics in the house.

Mcinku? wanna elaborate on the tubes statement?! any recomendations?!  :) - this is my first tube amp and im just learning my way through - im quite convinced an overtone is next (or hiwat if Nik moves there) (when my budget allows).

I made a finger jointed cabinet out of solid pine from the 1950`s. Just happened to be what the reclaimed wood place had that was wide enough.
Also used an old 20 watt celestion G12s which is very efficient.

I have played several old tweed fenders and my ceriatone is right up there with the best, including the rather obstinate mains hum!
I really must re-dress  the supply leads.

If you build it exactly from either Niks drawings or one of the many %e3 schematis available it whould be pretty much an exact copy. Only thing different will be the age of the components and non-USA capacitors etc.

The more you pay the closer you get....

I am wondering about doing a vibroverb or a piggy back tremolux next....

LOVE these amps
