Hello to all, I am new to any type of forum at all , but have decided to speak up on this forum because It seems that there is a lot of like minded people and also I think the forum needs support to survive, I am currently setting out on my first build-a 5e3 based unit , I have purchased a chassis and pre assembled board from Nik, I already have the transformers that I purchased cheap only problem is that they are not centre tapped on the H/v so I will for now use a bridge rectifier- oh well I can always swap and change at a later date! I intend this amp to be a test and learning bed, any comments on cost effective speaker choices would be appreciated - Thanks-Josh  Grin

Hi Josh,
I recently got a 5E3 from Nik and am still in the process of cabinet building. It's a great amp. As for speakers there are a lot of choices. I got a Celestion blue for mine but that was anything but cost effective. I've heard a lot of good things about Weber and Jensen speakers in these amps. People seem to typically go alnico as did I but my Celestion V30 sounds awesome in it also. Good luck on your quest.

I sort of run the gamut between classic rock, rockabilly, blues, and country, with a little western swing thrown in for good measure. I'm pretty open to a lot of different styles and I like taking a swing at most of them.

I'm making the cab out of pine with birch plywood for the baffle and back pieces. It's a typical tweed deluxe cabinet. I'm also making a head cab for it even though I got the combo chassis. I attached some brackets to the chassis to mount it and that will give me the option of a head or combo depending on my mood. Currently taking a break as the contact cement cures and about to put the tolex on the head.

sounds like we have very similar taste in music (I suppose that figures since we are building 5e3's), I might give the blue a try!, hopefully you will post some pictures of your cab when completed?

I recommend a Greenback for 5E3, I really like how it sounds with my 5E3... and not as expensive as the Blue I might add, although blue would probably sound awesome.

I see you're from Australia... I've heard Lorantz speakers are not so bad choice as well. I never heard those, just sharing some ideas.

Thanks mcinku,
My friend has greenbacks in his goldentone (great Australian amp), but I have not played through that amp for years as he lives a fair distance away, I will check out the Lorantz, aren't they a audio speaker?

Speaking of the goldentone I am planning on visiting him later in the year and i will draw up a layout and maybe that will be my next project amp-Josh Grin
