Title: 12at7 for v2 adds definition - anyone else tried it? Post by: Tone Control on September 30, 2010, 09:15:08 AM I like the 12ay7 in v1, using a 12ax7 would be unrewarding I suspect
But even so it's often mushy and there is little touch sensitivity. I tried adding a 12at7 in v2 This improved things a lot I think, I can get a lot of different tones, with a little more definition. The desirable sag is still there, and whacked up full there are better tones available (to my ears) Note: I like the strat neck pickup the best, and this is improved a lot too with this extra change, although the bottom E string is still a bit louder than the other 5 Cheers Tone Title: Re: 12at7 for v2 adds definition - anyone else tried it? Post by: sharp__edge on September 30, 2010, 02:22:23 PM i did consider changing the V2 tube for a 12AY7 in hope of getting similar results to what you described.
however, in the end, i realised i could keep the 12AX7 + 12AY7 configuration and still get definition by plugging into Mic or Instrument Input 2 (lower gain input). Title: Re: 12at7 for v2 adds definition - anyone else tried it? Post by: Tone Control on September 30, 2010, 07:00:22 PM hmm
I tried both with many settings, the sound is very different on both with the at7 Cheers Tone Title: Re: 12at7 for v2 adds definition - anyone else tried it? Post by: wyatt on September 30, 2010, 11:01:23 PM Just to note, the belief that all 12A*7's are interchangeable is a myth. The 12AU7 and the 12AT7 don't have the correct internal resistance to work correctly in most 12AX7 situations (phase splitting PI designs being a be exception).
Now the 5751 was specifically designed to repalce a 12AX7 with a gain rating of 70mu (similar to a properly biased 12AT7) Title: Re: 12at7 for v2 adds definition - anyone else tried it? Post by: Tone Control on October 01, 2010, 10:05:56 AM I've been following the advice from this page: http://thetubestore.com/gainfactor.html (http://thetubestore.com/gainfactor.html)
Please tell me if there is any mistakes there A 5751 might sound better then? Title: Re: 12at7 for v2 adds definition - anyone else tried it? Post by: Tone Control on October 11, 2010, 07:16:08 AM I'm sticking with the change for now
The sound is very different to just reducing volume onthe amp or guitar or using a lower-sensitivity input The amp sounds less muddy, and the saturation is more subtle, more dependent on my playing rather than "on all the time" personal taste though, but I always like to have the touch of my fingers determining the tone Cheers Tone |
