Title: Installing EF86 in an old Marshall combo
Post by: sourpatchkid on August 25, 2010, 07:20:52 PM
Hello everyone,

I'm considering purchasing a pre-built 18w TMB EF86, but I would like to install it in an old Marshall VS65r hybrid combo I have.  It's a simple 1x12" open back cabinet.  Has anyone attempted this (or something similar), and if so how did it turn out?

For those of you who have done conversions like this, what are some things I should consider before I delve into this project?  Any and all advice is much appreciated!

Thanks a bunch!

Hmmm... I guess there's not a lot of traffic in this forum.

Those are pretty popular amps, and this forum does get a fair amount of views.....But aren't you suggesting a rather difficult project. I might be way out of bounds, but aren't these two chassis' 180 degrees opposed? Seems like your old combo is the typical top mount with the tubes hanging upside down. But I think most of the 18 watt TMB chassis' are mounted on the bottom, usually in a head, with the tubes oriented in the other direction.  Maybe that is why you have not gotten a respone.....??
Like I said, I do not own either of these amps, so I could be completely wrong....
Good Luck

I don't know about your specific cab, but I built a combo cab for my 36 watt EF86.  Its a clone of a 1974 1x12 combo cab.  The chassis was designed for a head, but it works fine in a combo cab.  With a stock 1974 combo cab you might have to mod it slightly to get the chassis to fit.

Just make sure you have enough depth for the transformers and tubes.

Thanks for the responses y'all (and forgive my impatience :))

I think you're right, hired hand, I thought there might be a way to invert the chassis (so the tubes hand upside down, like a peavey classic 30), but now I see that all those kind of amps have top mounted controls.  My valvestate has the controls mounted on the front (same direction as the speaker faces) and there's definitely not enough clearance for the transformers and tubes.

I think I'm just going to build this up as a head and buy a 2x12 cab to go with it.  There are plenty of good used cabs floating around Austin.

Thanks again - any suggestions for what I should do with the combo?

Yeah..... I think that would be the smart way to go. Put it in a head box, and then versatility is the word of the day. Like you said, there are always plenty of new/used speaker cabs to choose from. You can choose between 10's, 12's and all different offerings from Eminence and WGS.....
Sell the combo or save it for a future project, or maybe even trade bait for something else.
Good Luck
