Title: low sound on the gain ch?
Post by: chuckb on April 13, 2012, 08:09:53 PM
I have just finished a build based on the ceriatone layout. I have loads of volume on the clean ch but very low vol on the gain ch. I'm thinking i have a wrong value resistor somewhere. i checked and re- checked but everything seems to be right according to the layout. There is one resistor I'm not to sure of the value and it's the one printed in red on the layout. pin 8 on v3? i have a 56k in there now. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Chuck.

Chuckb,
If your clean channel loud and proud it may be that you have a weak solder somewhere or a grounding issue. Have you tried reflowing you solder joints especially around your gain channel inputs?
The volume of the gain channel comes on pretty quickly using the master and it's VERY loud.

Yeah, check Every Thing between the in jack and the tube.
Speaking of tubes.....it is possible to have 1/2 of an AX7 go bad. Did you try a simple tube replacement.?

hey guys, i tried the re-solder thing and did a tube swap on all the preamp tubes as well and nothing. I've been through the amp and I still can't find the problem. I'll change out the input jack for the gain side and see if there is an issue with that.

Chuck,
If that doesn't work post some pics of your inputs, preamp and pot wiring on your gain and master.
Where about are you located?

Hey drew, i'm here in Canada. I'll send you some pics of the preamp and the pots if this doesn't work. Although I believe it may be the input. I'll post later on my findings.

Chuck,
Sure.
I am about an hour north of Toronto that's why I asked.
Have you built a lot of amps before this?

Nice,
What is the status of the amp thus far? Is the gain channel working as of yet? What kind of input jack are you using?

Hey drew, I haven't been able to get the gain ch working as it should yet. I get an blue arching on the rectifier tube and have blown a fuse. I tracked all my wiring and cannot see any errors but clearly something is blowing the fuse. When in ss mode the amp runs ok but still no high volume. I decided to take out the ss rectification and just go with the rectifier tube , i also disconected the pentode/triode switch but I ran into some problems as to where the wiring from pins 4 of the power tubes and how they are to be connected. i blew anothe couple of fuses. so at this point I decided to step away from it for awhile. I'll probably go back tonight and see where things stand . I'm still uncertian of how to wire pins #4 of the power tubes whith the 1/2 power switch taken out?
