Title: Liverpull tube selections
Post by: mikemck on November 11, 2007, 04:07:32 PM
What kind of tubes do you guys use/recommend for these? I've seen one user online recommending NOS GE EL84s for the power tubes, but I would think that in this amp, the pre-amp tubes are at least as critical.

I started with a set of TAD power tubes and re-issue Tung-Sol 12AX7s... there's a lot of character there, but it's a bit too clangy for my picking style and my guitars.

Best case, of course, would be new issue tubes...NOS prices are getting crazier each day.

Thanks in advance.

Go with JJ Tesla EL84 they are great.

I use them in an 18watt and DC30  .  Take some beating.

Tungsols are nice but i use Mullards, they are the best!.

Herby660 is right on.  JJ EL84's are great new production tubes.  Your money should go into selecting some good pre's.

Cheers ChrisL

I have tried all sorts of EL84's and Teslas are great.  The pre amp valves seem to make all the difference.

I have six mullard valves from the 60's which i move around my amps, when I want that special sound.  Otherwise Tungsol's are good, best newer tube as seem richer than most other.  The JJ preamps just seemed less harmonic to me and colder more sterile when clean. Full blast there is harmonic loss but it is less noticable.

Check out the new production Mullard el84's. They smoke the jj's! I tried both. They are very affordable too. Same price as JJ's basically.
Tungsol for the preamp.

Hi guys,

I bought my Pool without the trannies.  I had one of the Wreck gurus from the Amp Garage install the Toneslut trannies for me.  My amp is on the Fedex truck as we speak, so I haven't tried them yet.  But, his advice was that the JJ's sound "splatty" in the Liverpools.   He suggested NOS GE's.

Clearly, the JJ EL84 is the best of the new-production tubes.  I have some in my Dr. Z Stingray and they sound awesome.  but Wrecks are notoriously sensitive to tubes.  I guess it's not solely the preamp tubes.

Good Luck,
Brad
